Understood Etiquette of RP and Playing with Roleplayers

This thread will probably not get noticed by anyone, and if it does it may very well get flamed because most people do not care about this subject but anyway. I just wanted to put this thread out there and hope people do see it and think to be slightly more courteous towards other players who may like to stay in character in game. This really isn't a big deal to me, but I have seen other players in my guild or in zone chat mention this, and it is a minor annoyance but nothing worth complaining about, but many non-RP players will use yell and say, the commonly understood RP channels (in most MMOs I have played anyway, I could be wrong), as a normal chat channel. This is fine, except when using these channels it is just good etiquette to mark what you say as being out of character. This could be by ((putting parentheses around it)) or tagging it as ((ooc)) or (ooc at the beginning or end, or something. As long as you make it apparent that you are speaking OOC. This seems to be happening more in public dungeons, which leads to something else...if you really do not want to search for, or have searched and cannot find the skyshard in the delve, the public dungeon has it's own Zone chat, ask in that channel. Again, this is not a thread berating anyone, or trying to tell people they have to RP, just a guide to one bit of etiquette when playing with roleplayers.

Umm, so you're saying Yell and Say chat are common RP channels of communication? I've played MMOs for years, and on none of them was I ever on an RP server, so this is new to me. Another result of MegaServer. This is the first MMORPG i've played that combined PvP, PvE, and RP types into on place. I've seen quite a few negative community issues come of this combination.

I won't be changing my method of communication to cater to RPers, but atleast now I know. Learn something new everyday.

In my experience, when something HAS to give the SMALLER demographic is usually the one who has to adjust. So instead of making all non-rp players do something, why not just do an 'In Character' tag or [IC] for short.

Yell, and Say channels were never meant as RP specific channels. I have no idea where you got that from. Say is for local chat and is the default chat channel for everyone. Why would a non-RPer have to place an OOC prefix in their chat. You are the ones RPing, maybe you should put an RP prefix in front of everything you say.

    This is pretty good advice.

I have nothing against roleplayers, I am all for immersion, but you can not ask an entire server to adjust to using OOC for the purpose of satisfying the small minority that acctually roleplays in each phase.

I see the dilemma though. The best thing would be to have exclusive RP servers. I would probably chose that one even if I don´t participate in RP. I would off course respect RP etiquette.

I roleplay. I'm always in character in /say and I don't even use /yell. I'm sorry, but even as a heavy roleplayer, I'm never going to expect people who don't roleplay to put brackets around what they say just to cater to us. All that I ask is that they let us roleplay without grief.

I'm a heavy roleplayer, but I usually play the comic relief. Feel free to hit me up if you see me in game NA-side.

LOL, I say let people play the way they like, I turned off zone, yell, and all guild channels except my guild (gold spam). The rude players are always there, I only consider the source.

Thanks for commenting everyone. The [IC] tag is good advice. I am not even a heavy roleplayer, I just always thought it was an understood thing that when using local /say and /yell those were for roleplayers, so I know if I was a heavy roleplayer I may feel encroached upon possibly. Again this is not saying for people to have to do anything it is in players helping players as I wanted to make a small guide about roleplaying chat. I personally don't care about the OOC tag thing, heck I even sometimes don't use them like if I am in a rush to type something, but every mmo I have been in I always used the OOC tag in /say and /yell as I understood they were channels designated to roleplayers, just like don't mine an ore someone else is fighting the mobs by because it is rude, I thought they were the same thing just etiquette.

Most RP guilds will tell you straight up when you join them what is expected of you in the game and how to use the various chat channels. The Daggerfall Foreign Legion http://daggerfallforeignlegion.enjin.com/ an RP guild I belong to only uses /say for RP and guild and group chat are OOC or Out Of Character.

    Roleplayer here too.

We are in the minority and I for one would NEVER expect a non-roleplayer to have to adjust their way of playing merely to accommodate me.

If I am engaged in roleplaying then I will usually turn zone chat off and pretty much exclusively use /say. I will use my common sense in responding to others in /say too. If I am engaging in RP with someone and someone else gets involved and it sounds like they are roleplaying then great. If they are just being *** then I will gloss over their comments as if they weren't there. If they continue to be *** then I will put them on ignore.

Truth be told though, I haven't roleplayed much in ESO so far as I have only found very small isolated pockets of RP going on. This will change once the race to VR quietens down I think.

Here's a question, though maybe it warrants a new topic...

I didn't really start off intending to heavy RP, but I'm trying to get into it. I've never RP'ed before, but I've had a backstory for my toon since I started him, and I'm wondering what's the best way to find other RP'ers without joining a guild. I don't know if a guild would necessarily fit my character, as he's kind of a loner right now. Sometimes, I'll loiter in a tavern for a while, but usually only see people running through for quests or looting. Does it help to "monologue," as in typing /emote messages to myself every so often?

Sorry if that's a dumb question. I've only encountered an RP-group once in game, so I'm unfamiliar with the rules.

Say and Yell are used commonly for non-RP communication.

If you want to RP, use /emote.

It will turn your chat purple.

    People rarely usurp that channel.
