As I got into VR my basic single target/CC build started to bog down with all the three (and sometimes more) mob groups along the questing path. I wasn't dying more, it was just taking too long. So I switched to a pretty basic AoE build and it made a huge difference. Now I look for large groups, up to five mobs is fine. In public dungeons with five mob groups I now have people following me.
Skill 1: Crystal Fragments. I like one single target spell for solo mobs.
Skill 2: Fire Ring from Elemental Ring. Spammable. Easy to obtain 45% crit. Synergizes very well with Dest staff and Dunmer class passives.
Skill3: Volcanic Rune, morphed from Fire Rune. This is my opener, it's another fire synergized skill, does damage and stuns, allowing you interrupt free spamming of Pulsar which allows more crits.
Skill 4: Critical Surge, morphed from Surge. Cast right before a fight, this returns health on all those Fire Ring crits. As long as you aren't interrupted your health bar rarely drops into the alarm zone.
Skill 5: Inner Light, morphed from Magelight. Increases crit 18%.
Passive of note: Last Destruction passive, Destruction Expert works well as a magicka return, with a group of three mobs you get enough back you are at 75% already for next fight.
With Dark Exchange on weapon switch when needed, there is minimal downtime.
This is probably a basic build for alot of sorcs but until you start levelling some of those mage guild and dest staff skills it takes awhile to finish so its nice to start on that earlier than I did.
