Lv 4 Smithy Stronger Than 8 Smithy? Super Confused

I have an alt that does most of my crafting and he is a lvl 8 BS but only can make one style of armor, his race and they look rather vanilla- he's a High Elf. My Nord, lvl 4 BS, can make THREE kinds of armor and his heavy armor pieces so far, a light steel look with power blue, looks great. So how is it then my lvl 4 BS has more options and has better looking armor then my level 8 BS? They are both the same playing game level, level 11.

Because level of profession has nothing to do with what styles you can craft? You need to find/buy Motifs, which you then learn, and you can craft armor and weapons in that style.
There are motifs for each available race, Imperials included, + non-racial ones (Barbaric, Primal, Daedric, Ancient Elves,...)
When you start the game, you can only make armor in style of your race, no other style until you get the motifs.

sounds like somewhere along the line your Nord read some racial motif (style) books. Your level 8 blacksmith missed out on those so can only make the one racial style he was born with, (and unfortunately you don't like that look.)

If you plan on running 2 blacksmiths in your set of characters it is fine, if you really want your level 8 blacksmith to be the main crafter, make sure any Motif Books you run across from now on go through him first. Or, work the level 4 blacksmith as you main crafter ... he will catch up fast enough.

They're the blue books titled "Racial Motifs 1: The High Elves" etc.
