How does Armor work?

Seriously guys, how does this stat work? There's no such thing as a tooltip. I dont know if it is a reduction of flat dmg or % dmg. DOes it give anything? How does it work?

"Decreases the amount of damage you take from physical attacks."
I believe some people have said that the soft cap (when you start hitting overcharged) is roughly 33% damage reduction and the hard cap is around 50%.

Armor protects against physical melee and ranged attacks. Spell Resistance protects against the various types of magic damage (fire, frost, poison, etc.)

It is a fairly meaningless stat and I would welcome a deeper explanation on what it actually does, other than higher being better.

My level 34 DK has around a 1000 armor right now and she's hitting the soft cap. What does that mean in practice? If something hits me for 200 physical damage, how is it measured against my 1000 armor? Is it reducing incoming damage by (for example) 20%, or a solid 20 points?

Suppose the soft cap is at 33%. That's fine, if you can reach the cap, but what if you can't? If you have no idea where your soft cap is, how do you know how much your armor is doing for you?

The tool tip on this stat is more pointless than it even saying anything at all!

Currently my Light Armor Templar Level 33, is at 560 Armor (Soft Cap = 1090) now... my question, which I can't find anywhere... is what "560" does for me?

I tested against what was a Skeleton Warrior... he was hitting me for 80 (Light) and 232 (Heavy)... if I was at 1090... what would they hit for?

I'd really like to see some hard numbers or a spreadsheet that could advise of this... it makes little to no sense. Much like the other stats too.

Level 30 Skeever Vs 33 Templar

Armor / Light Attack / Heavy Attack
    560 / 70 / 123
    348 / 75 / 132
    279 / 77 / 135
    0 / 82 / 143

I am unable to test what they would be at soft cap... as all my armor is light, but this will give some numbers I guess..

    Basic rules are:
    Higher is better.
If you use heavily class or either staff tree, go for light (more magika)
If you go for any other weapon, go for medium (more stamina).
Tank's should use 1h+Shield+Heavy. But heavy might make you hit softcap with passives alone. And Blocking/interupting/dodging is almost more important for tank then pure armor stat.
Things get muddier the clsoe you get to armor cap and later in game (many mix and match armor).

If you are barely overcharged, you are just "good for your level". If that is something important for your build/role, try to keep it at "barely overcharged" with situational buffs.
