Welcome, I’m Teroh and I’m here to discuss Templar Tanking with You!
First my Experience, I’ve tanked successfully all Pre Veteran Rank dungeons and have tanked Veteran Ranked Spindleclutch, Fungal Grotto, and Banished Cells.
My group consists of a Templar Resto Staff Healer, a Bow Sorcerer and a Bow nightblade, this group has been fairly consistent the whole time.
Now on to the good stuff.
Armor choice: I personally prefer for tanking 7/7 Heavy Armor. I mainly prefer this for the increased healing received as well as the other passives that assist in tanking. 5/2 heavy light could work as well since we are usually magicika heavy.
Set Choices: I use 3/3 Twilights Embrace and 3/3 whitestrakes Retribution. Twilight provides you with 10% additional healing received and Whitestrakes gives you a damage shield if you fall below 30% hp.
Weapon Choice: On my main bar is 1 handed sword and shield and on the second bar is a bow. I have used resto staff as my second before and feel it is better for group situations but while I level I will continue to use the bow.
Skill Bar One:
1) Inner Fire – Ranged Taunt, uses magicka.
2) Ransack – Melee taunt, uses stamina and increases your armor.
3) Utility Spell of your choice – I normally slot Blinding Flashes if I’m fighting large packs of mobs but against a boss I’ll slot Purifying Ritual. Having a pocket cleanse is invaluable.
4) Absorb Magic – Increase block mitigation by 100, blocking cost reduced by 8% and heals you when struck by a spell. Routinely heals for 600+ and can precast it as it lasts for 30 seconds.
5) Restoring Focus – Super Cheap Magic Cost , don’t have the exact numbers but its something like 1200+ spell resistance and armor while standing in its aura as well as receive 15% more healing. With a duration close to 20seconds its amazing.
Ultimate: Solar Prison or Dawnbreaker depending on the situation.
Skill Bar Two: I went the ranged DPS/Utility route for this bar due to the fact that some bosses do not respond to taunt or its more effective to kite/heal/dps over tanking at particular points.
1) Venom Arrow- Dot as well as an interrupt
2) Vampire’s Bane – high damage dot and snare also instant cast
3) Magnum Shot – good damage and knock back, very useful for kiting
4) Purifying Ritual – Aoe cleanse
5) Honor The Dead – Oh *** heal to help in oh *** moments.
Ultimate: Remembrance amazing aoe heal.
Strategies:
1) Multiple Adds- Pre cast absorb magic, run in casting inner fire on the enemies with the highest damage. Once in melee range use Ransack, Gather a few up then start blocking as you’ll have a lot of incoming damage. Once damage has stabilized bash casters and block power attacks while making sure enemies are not on your healer.
2) Single Target: For Boss fights and other single target fights your strategy will be dictated by the mechanics of that fight. But for stationary fights you’ll want to drop and keep up restoring aura for the amazing passives. Remember your job is not to spam abilities. Keep your taunt up, your buffs up and block. Play smarter not harder. Never go Out of stamina if possible because blocking is the difference between life or death.
Tip: Do not get tunnel vision some fights will require you to switch to an alternate weapon. I recommend a resto staff with honor the dead, purifying ritual and mutagen with 2 dpsing abilities. Sometimes you will need to help out your healer especially for fights where the boss is immune to taunt.
*This guide is a work in progress , please feel free to PM or ask me any questions. Also if you need tips on beating a certain boss as a Templar tank I’ll be more than happy to help you.!
