Escort Quests stopping midstride

I have had experiences with three quests now where I had to follow an NPC through an area fighting mobs and performing tasks called out. Several times during all three of these the NPC stops and becomes unresponsive. I fix the problem by logging out and re-logging then the NPC starts walking again and I can finish the quest. This happens multiple times during the same quest. The logging is a workaround at the moment but seems to me this issue needs attention.
