Sorcerer Crafting :)

Hey folks!

I'm patiently waiting for my EOS to download at home (can't wait!), and while it loads I've been looking into crafting. I've always been a big crafter on any game I play, so I'm eager to dig right in. But I was hoping one of you old-hats could advise me on what crafting skills to snatch up first as a sorcerer.

So far I was thinking clothing, woodworking and provisioning as starters. Alchemy if I can squeeze it in there. I know that you can eventually get them all (which is awesome), but I figure it's best to focus on a few at start. I have a friend who I will play with a bit, who plans to do heavy armor, weapons and enchanting, so I thought my skills should counter-balance hers.

Is this a practical approach for a starting sorcerer (focused on healing/storm magic and light armor)? And I have no problems hanging around low level areas and cutting back my actual leveling to work on crafting if needed

Thanks for looking guys, can't wait to see you all in-game!
Currently Playing:
Sorcerer Claudia Warren May, lvl 40. Woodworking 25/Clothing 25/Provisioning 50.
Dragon Knight, lvl 8. Blacksmithing/Enchanting.
Nightblade, lvl 3. Alchemy.
Templar, lvl 7.

The issue will be skill points. Initially, you're going to be quite limited in them, so you have to choose wisely on expenditure.

So, ask yourself. Do you want to be able to make custom staves / bows or do you want to go with armors initially?

Either would be good, just depends on what you want to farm more. Plants or hack at logs? Later on, you'll have skill points aplenty (and the ability to easily go back and farm mats). And you can always research traits while you're leveling up.

    @Sihnfahl's suggestions are absolutely fantastic.

As you level, try to research and break down gear to level up your crafting.
I would highly suggest picking only ONE profession to start with.

Gathering resources you don't need, and trade these for the ones you do!
You get more experience from breaking down gear than from making it,
and breaking down player-made gear is the fastest way to gain levels.

@Sihnfahl That's such a tough choice, but good advice, thank you  (stares at the crafting tables seriously . . . ). Beat sticks or shiny shirts, hmmmm.

@Terminus Is it possible to go back and gather materials for lower level skills then? I've heard something about low level mobs not dropping materials, but if you can go back and scour the ground for, say, woodworking materials and provisioning stuff 10 levels later (with more skill points), then that's all good.

It's possible, but not necessarily practical.
Better to collect them as you level and store them in your bank rather than having to go back and not get any experience for it!

I really couldn't imagine doing more than one crafting profession seriously.

It takes a large skill point investment to be able to craft good gear in even one area, much less two or three.

If you are really set on multiple crafts... You may want to consider multiple characters. My sorcerer is going provisioning, alchemy and enchanting. My templar is going for the gear crafts.

This works well but the inventory management can be overwhelming at times

The one piece of advice I would give is to get provisioning out of the way first is ridiculously easy to level up just do a few city runs and once you hit 50 sell any of the ingredients you wont need (depending on what your best recipes are). You will find that bank/bag space will be a problem but if you do either power level provisioning or cut it out completely you wont have too many issues.

Now I'm wondering which is most practical to level . . . food for everyone or clothes for myself?

Provisioning is ridiculously easy to level if you have even the slightest hoarding tendencies. I have a level 16 character with level 35 provisioning. Does that mean I have the skill points in it. Not really, I only have 2, but it does allow me to put the skill points in it when I get to higher levels when I have some spare points.

There are going to be enough skill points to level all crafting skills and still have plenty left over for your combat abilities, passives and racials. If you want to level those three (the same three I'm doing currently) pick up the materials as you level and bank them for later. Make sure to have research going at all times if you can and then just put the skill points in when you get a higher level. You'll be able to pick up about 150 skill points easy by the time you hit level 50 and you only need a maximum of 23 skill points in one crafting profession to pick up all of the points.

If you're worried about bag space or anything else just go ahead and level one profession as you go but don't make it provisioning as it's too easy to level up at the moment if you loot everything and pick up the items and some recipes along the way.

    Hope that helps.

@Goldov Thanks a lot  I think, after reading through more information, that I'm still going to try and level several at once. I think if I spend lots of time exploring every nook or cranny, I should get enough skyshards to be happy

I guess I am the outlier here, but I decided to do metalworking, cloth, and woodworking all at the same time. I just do it in my spare time and stop at every node between quests. Upped by bag space to 90 and bank slots to 80. 10, 13,14 respectivly for level.

Since I rolled a full on healer (Both bars are support abilities and I have 1 offensive with peircing javlin for solo ventures) I have skillpoints to burn. I've put 5 points into crafting talents in woodworking and 3 in metals. Everytime I log I research and I break down EVERYTHING except sets to sell.

Lvl 29 (templar) and loving it! It takes very little time to hit nodes between questing and I get pleanty of mats from deconstructing. I would be higher in levels across the board, but that dang thing called life keeps taking up TESO time! :)

Did not care for enchanting and alchemy and I just collect and learn all recipes I find for provisioning.
