Why can't A Study in Discipline be Abandoned?

Yep, I just ran to the two other locations where the quest giving lady is, subclassed to a new skill line at each, and neither one still completed the quest for me. I just want to abandon it at this point. I don't need it completed at this point as I can already Subclass. I would really like my quest slot back. :'(

I tried the one in Riften and it kept taking my 1500 good but not completing. So I went to Dune and it worked.

@ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_Kevin The fix for this didn't work. And there are no clear directions on how to do this quest. Some skill lines have a symbol by them, some don't, but what do these symbols mean and how are we supposed to use them? This quest is for a major system that was added to the game and it should not be such a struggle.

So far I’ve risked taking the quest on two characters and not encountered the bug. I have 12 level 50 characters, at least one of each class, with all class skill lines fully leveled.

Every other quest I know of with the exception of Cadwell's Silver and Gold can be abandoned so what makes this one different?

This is a problem for me and it is not unreasonable to want to know why this one quest is the exception to how every other quest behaves.

I mean, you're kind of defeating your own argument here. Just complete the quest without changing your skills. It won't change anything. With acknowledging you can't abandon Cadwell's silver and gold, you're arguing against a precedent they've already set. Completing it or not changes nothing. Is it annoying? Sure. But does not completing it so you can make a point accomplish anything? Also no. But I would agree with the idea of being able to abandon ANY quest. But it would be all or nothing.

That is what I did eventually but it wasn't completing. I lost 1500 gold every time I tried and only got it to complete after I went to a different quest giver.

If we have to complete this quest to get it out of our quest log then it needs to work every time.

On that I agree, but I think that may have just been a result of a glitch that was associated for awhile. That happened to me as well until they fixed it and all my characters could complete it

It didn't fix for everyone. I had to keep giving them gold and choosing a skill line and placing it and it still wouldn't take me to the part to speak to her and complete it. I lost about 7500 gold before it finally worked. And this was just yesterday.

The quest is absolutely bugged as far as completing it. I've had a couple characters that got the option when done to complete the quest. I have a couple more who just cannot get any option to finish the quest. Just to refresh things, one character went to the Dune site today, spent 1500 and changed skills. No option to finish quest, just out 1500 gold. Went to Evermore and got exactly the same result. So lost 3000 gold today to verify this quest is still bugged.

A fine alternative would be to abandon the quest but as OP highlights, this is not possible.

The quest is just very unintuitive in that it makes no sense that you're only allowed to choose a skill line that you never reached lvl 50 in. I can't see the logic in that, as if every player has only played one or just a few classes and is only going to use the subclassing system to sample a skill line they never tried before. And this means that you always have to choose one of those few skill lines you never fully leveled (after playing my current necro for a while I'll only have 2 skill lines left that never reached 50) and then pay the 1500 to respec into the skill line you actually want to subclass.
So yeah you should just be able to abandon the quest or you need to be able to subclass by visiting a shrine or something and not make the quest mandatory if you're already familiar with the system. Or make it that the quest proceeds if you pick any skill line from another class, which is kind of the most logical and intuitive thing to do.

Where does it tell us that? And if that is so, then how was this possible?

I don't know, I haven't reached that point yet. All I know is the quest wants you to pick a skill line you never reached lvl 50 in otherwise it will keep saying 'subclass a new skill line' and you can't finish the quest.

If that was intended players that have already maxed all the skill lines would never be able to subclass.

Happily I never have (and never will) use any necro skills. So I chose a necro skill then backed out. Bingo, it gave me the option to complete the quest - and without actually changing my existing skills. Successfully repeated this with my other character who was stuck in the quest. Will certainly never go near that quest giver again!

The quest is most definitely still bugged.

I have 4 toons that have the quest but can't complete nor abandon it. ZOS said it's fixed. But it's not. The bug can apparently be avoided if you are on Mouse and Keyboard. But for those of us on consoles, we don't have the option to switch between Gamepad UI and Mouse/Keyboard, so we're outa luck and stuck with the bug forever.

There have been numerous appeals to ZOS staff on these forums for an update, but they have gone radio silent on the matter and won't respond to those appeals.

I'm on mouse and keyboard, and it still seems bugged to me.

I leveled my new, wanted, skill line up all the way to level 50, but still couldn't complete the quest until I choose and payed for a second, not-wanted, skill line to subclass. This second skill line subsequently did not appear as an option in my skill menu anyway, but at least this incomprehensible exchange got rid of the quest from my journal.

    Holy jeezballoo!

I randomly tried to close this quest for the umpteenth time today. Something I do approximately once a week or so. And today it finally actually completed!

I can't help but think there was a stealth fix sometime within the last couple of weeks, because the last time I had tried was somewhere in the middle of Phase 1 of the event. (Not saying the event has anything to do with it, just using it as a timeline reference)

I have all the 21 class lines maxed out, no matter which class I choose as a replacement works. I've tried numerous times to choose different class lines. It never worked. Can't finish or leave the quest on console no matter what.

This makes me really glad that Stendarr (or perhaps Sheogorath, who knows?) smiled upon me when I abandoned it, because it actually worked.

I'm on PSNA, and it was driving me nuts as I'm was in the same boat. I've been tyring to complete the quest, and hounding the staff here on the forums for an update pretty much weekly since the day subclassing landed on consoles.

Then yesterday, out of the blue I happened to be passing by the questgiver in The Rift while out doing surveys.. and >BAM!< it completed. Outa nowhere, and I've tried all 3 questgivers multiple times in the past. It was @SilverBride mentioning that she had to go to a different questgiver that reminded me to give it a shot as I passed by. And it's been so long that I don't recall from which particular location I grabbed the quest, so I can't say as to whether going to a different location to turn it in helped or not.
