If ESO were to shut down would you switch to WoW?

Hell No! ESO is the hill I'm dying on!
I'm not sure why just 1 poll option needed someone else's opinion inserted into it, but taken as a simple 'no' it fits my answer.

I already play another MMO (Guild Wars 2) and have done since before ESO was announced so it's not like I'm glued to this game.

But I've also never wanted to play WoW. Back in the Warcraft 2 era I used to think a Warcraft RPG could be my perfect game, so I was excited when I first heard about WoW, but I'd also recently quit Ultima Online because it just didn't work for me, and it quickly became clear WoW was the kind of MMO I didn't have the time or commitment for. (There were other things too, like I was angry they not ony destroyed Quel'thalas, they made me do it.)

None of the expansions, updates or other changes since launch have made me think I would want to play WoW and if anything I gave less time for that sort of game now.

I'm playing ESO because it's an Elder Scrolls game. If I wasn't playing it I wouldn't want or need another MMO to replace it, I'd just be back to waiting for the single player games to see more of Tamriel.

imagine ESO shuts down and TES VI comes out and is as disappointing as Starfield... I would probably stop gaming alltogether :D

Nope, here for Elder Scrolls. Not a serial mmo player. Not dying on any hills though. There are a ton of other games to play but they don't have to be mmo's and they definitely don't have to be WoW.

It's also worth noting that beyond the setting and lore being uniquely interesting to me, I started playing eso during the covid lockdown period and it's extremely unlikely I'll have that sort of time available to invest in a new mmo again for many years - so I'd most likely return to single player games that I can play at my own pace, or multiplayer games that I can pop in and out of more casually without having to worry about grinding and getting caught up all the time.

That is like going back to EverQuest or Ultima. I'd try something modern like Dune, another solid world and lore.

Yeah, when the lights go out, I'm heading for the door lol.

Not going to go thru all this again with another MMO, which let's be honest, it would never be quite the same anyways. Hopefully that does not happen and so maybe ESO will pull thru. I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't, but alas, tis not up to you or me to decide. We just kept it around longer so if nothing else be glad for that.

ESO entered a new phase this year, yes. That doesn't mean it's dying.

ESO and WoW are not the same. They key difference is that ESO has been a vehicle for single player TES content through chapters.

What's changed is that is no longer the case. It's not hard to imagine why, but I'm not going to touch on that yet again. So the cold hard reality is that means they require less staff, regardless of how much money it's making or has made. That's business.

People need to relax and enjoy the game. If they ever enjoyed it.. It's hard to tell sometimes.

We're in changing times. Maybe it's time to change our attitudes a little and appreciate all the things we have instead of pining for all the things we want because we're all very lucky humans to live in the period and to be able to enjoy things like ESO.

No, just simple "no" without all this "die hill" drama.

I'm here for The Elder Scrolls. Just like I play STO for Star Trek. The fact that both are MMOs doesn't mean anything. I never played WoW and don't intend to.

If I was being honest, and ESO go poof (which it isn't but for funsies lets play), I'd switch to Ashes of Creation. It's an upcoming PvPvX MMO that seems very interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of coming to a game thats been out for ages so going over to a game still in active dev is probably where I'd end up.

I'd probably just quit playing MMO's altogether and spend the rest of my existence constructing a life size replica of myself made out of different colored dyed rice.

I play games for the Elder Scrolls world and lore, so no

This. If this game wasn’t Elder Scrolls I wouldn’t be here either, MMOs generally aren’t my cup of tea.

I will go out on a limb and guess that making legitimate surveys is not something you do as a career as every survey you create has an inherent bias or some random personal opinion thrown in. As many others have pointed out, the MMO landscape consists of many more games than ESO and WoW. If ESO shuts down, I would just go play one of the many others MMO games out there or start playing more single player games in my Steam and GoG backlog.

A better question would be why is WoW still going when ESO seems to be struggling?

I haven't played WoW in over ten years and like EOS better but apparently WoW has something that either keeps long term players OR brings in enough new players that stay to offset the leavers. And WoW does not even have a platform.

Maybe something that the gaming designers need to study?

Myself I tend to believe it's due to the constant major changes all the time. I'm so sick of having to rebuild my builds every time I find one I enjoy. Changes to core class skills like NB cloak, vendoring from 30 to two week time frame without a reduction in listing fees, jabs changes, especially mythic items being OP during a chapter release then getting toned down every single time later on, examples go on and on. Just ran people out of the game due to changes very FEW liked or asked for. And in many cases they were brought up on the testing server way ahead of time. No replies or changes. I think many of us just feel unheard.

Just so plain tired I managed to get one characters skills up for subclassing but when I got to the point of deciding which armor set and what CP points to choose I just stopped. We've seen nothing but nerfs/changes since it went live and if anything history tells us these changes are not going to stop. IMO WoW makes changes but not massive nerf hammers or core gameplay changes to things many enjoy every few months. ESO has a better world, better quests, it's not so cartoony looking as WoW which is why I like it better.
