Strange things near Riften Mages Guild

I guildie reported seeing a strange portal to West Weald outside the RIften Mages Guild. They don't own the West Weald content and when they tried to use the portal they were told they didn't own the content. Fair enough.

When I went to see the portal for myself I couldn't see anything at all. Then I realised that some objects and an NPC were "popping in" unusually close to me and it didn't look like the normal text popping.

While checking out this popping in I walked around behind the inn next to the Mages Guild to get a more distant view and then things got really strange. At distance I could see crates. As I got closer the crates disappeared and then when I got closer still the crates reappeared.

I have a video of this on YouTube. I try and keep the crates just above the centre of the screen. They disappear at the seven second mark and reappear at the 13 second mark. You might have to fight with YouTube to get a usable video. If you see a largish indistinct grey blob, that's the floor in front of the brown crates.

I friend of mine who is very smart and has played much more ESO than me said that it sounds like the server is trying give me two instances at the same time. She might have been referring to the old phasing systems. It wouldn't surprise me if phasing is still in the ESO engine even if it isn't in the ESO game any more. It also wouldn't surprise me at all if the devs still use phasing to pre-stage content releases. It's what I would do.

I did not know there was a portal to West Weald behind Riften Mages Guild. I’ll have to check it out.

I think the crates may just be due to the way the game updates resolution as you approach an object, or it could be You Tube compression.

The portals are for the scribing system and take the player to the Eyvea scribing location. From the next patch (coming June 3 in New Zelaand) scribing will become part of the base game and so these portals should work normally for everyone regardless of wether they own the Gold Road expansion.

The disappearing crates sounds like a problem with the graphic settings. If you use Nividia or AMD graphics card use the optimal settings from the Graphics card companion app, also ensure the latest drivers are installed. Alternately you will have to test by changing the texture quality and draw distance under the graphics options to find the optimal setting for your setup.

The portals that only some people can see and the disappearing crates both being by the Riften Mages Guild could easily be a coincidence.

I figured the portals were probably scribing related.

Neither the guildie that saw the portal nor me own West Weald, but they could see the portal and I can't.

I fiddled with my graphics settings on PTS and nothing helped. It really does look like maybe some LOD data is missing. The stuff on Many-Eyes-Watching's table disappears at distance in a very unsettling way, but that's probably completely normal.
