You cannot unsummon a companion while they are suppressed.

... Case in point, I had Zerith-var as active companion, but he was suppressed because I was in a house. I tried to port to Coldharbour, remembered that it gives him a rapport hit, tried to unsummon him, but there's just no way to do that.
