Maybe they mean the names with many special characters that you can not type easily.

Players whose name is a long string of mixed upper case "i" and lower case "l" are generally difficult to reference using the name as an identifier because it's very difficult to perceive the difference accurately.
The OP seems to be talking about pvp situations where they can't have their own group focus fire the healer (for example) because they can't use the name. It's also been used to make it difficult to be reported.

If there's an issue with a particular player or players, suggest reporting them using proper channels. Or maybe offer a little more explanation of what issue zos should be addressing exactly?

EDIT: Ah I think I get the problem now from some of the other posters - Maybe the reporting system needs to be improved somehow, I mean I'm not sure they can review every name to make sure it's unique and easy to type. People will always find ways to make gibberish names.

You're on Playstation, aren't you? There is a specific person that changed their name, kept changing the characters around when ID changes started. Can you guess what type of player/person they are? Obviously they do it because it's difficult to determine what name to type in the report and all Zos had to do within the past 10 years was put a "report player" link when we click on their name. ESO is the only game I'm aware if that doesn't have this feature.

The nickname is Barcode. I saw that in pvp zone chat and it took me a moment to understand who that is. I think we have a few players with barcode type names. Does that really break tos?

As far as calling one out to be focused, that would be a problem. This makes me remember a pvp guild I was in years ago. The crown of our pvp group was a Templar and when he wanted us to focus a certain player he would mark the player with one of the Backlash morphs. I suppose that is not helpful if the crown is not a Templar and skills that clearly mark are not plentiful; nightblade has one.

Question marks went up in my head as well.

I guess Zenimax could make it so a character can repeat only so many times, so instead of IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII, it would be IIIlIIIlIIIlIIIl. I can think of many variations of that if more examples are required.

IliIliIliIliIliIli is another interesting name. I think it looks pretty cool.

    Hello!

If you suspect someone is breaking the rules, we ask that you please report them through the in-game feature. This will allow our team to look into the reports more easily. You can follow these steps for your platform:
    PC/Mac
    Console

Please be aware we cannot assist with in-game violations on the forums. A certain amount of rivalry and competitive razzing is healthy for any game community, especially one with PVP elements. We don't feel that publicly calling out or accusing others by name on our forums is in spirit of the game or our community. If you genuinely believe someone has violated our Terms of Service, you should report them in-game via the support interface — do not bring the situation onto the official ESO community forums.

I saw one flying around in Cyrodiil months ago, the biggest issue is that it is hard to know the name to report if they are that hard to target. On PC I think I figured out a workaround with addons, but unsure if it would be possible on console.

On PC-NA there was a whole group of them, and I think there was even a guild named barcodes or something like that. I doubt they are all cheating like the one I saw though.

Ethnicity has nothing to do with it. People of different ethnicities can speak, read, and write a variety of languages. A deliberately meaningless string of i and L designed to be unintelligible is not language. The comparison is inappropriate.

A video or SS with the platform/server, location, and time should be sufficient for Zenimax to figure things out. Everyone can take an SS, and I'm pretty sure every platform can take a video.

It is also fairly common in some PvP games to have odd names or characters. Much of it cannot be prevented, as the examples I provided earlier.

Possible, but I doubt that alone would be able to identify them. Perhaps. I also only ran into this person once (I don't PVP much). I have heard mention of people flying around with scrolls and dropping them in the slaughterfish though. Since I don't PVP I don't really care THAT much, but it would be best to fix whatever they are doing to manipulate the game to fly around and teleport underground. I have seen videos of people doing this in trials too, but unsure if that was fixed.

I used to use this: https://www.esoui.com/downloads/info1818-BotScanner2000.html

,Just looking at a player makes it easy to report, etc.

It hasnt been maintained so I dont know if it still works or if there is another addon thatll do the job so YMMV

ToxicPlayers has a keybind option too, I haven't needed to test it out again. But this won't help those on console, but I don't know how bad the cheating is over there. I haven't played a console since PSP at AIT and before that a Super Nintendo.

I saw these same names appear on PC EU a couple of years ago. Not cheating, but many would behave in a fairly toxic manner, knowing it was almost impossible to report them in game. Hadn't seen them for a while though so thought they had moved on to another game or gotten banned or something, idk. Looks like they might have just switched servers or its copy-cats, I couldn't really say.

I will note, different tactics have been used by groups over the entire lifespan of the game to avoid being targeted down/singled out during combat. Polymorphs was a common method used years ago where the entire group would all use the skeleton polymorph to make it very difficult to target down the healers since everyone looked like the same skeleton. Another is the constant weaving in and out and behind each other in the group is an almost mandatory mitigation tactic for current organized raids making it much harder for unorganized players to target down each group member one at a time (with easily accessible evasion buff countering AoE abilities that should counter this tactic).

The names are probably the "next step" in this, but it really makes no sense to me why people want to go this far, just to "win" PvP in ESO lol.

That guild is a strong PS NA guild and people just get b hurt over getting beat so now they want to go after their names. lol
They are very beatable by another good group though.

I can tell you that you can target players on PC and report them without having to type in their name. You can also right click their name in a chat window to report them. No "Typing" is required. I have no idea why you don't have something similar on Console. Seems to be a no brainer solution to this problem.

In world of warcraft when typing in a barcode name, it automatically blocks it so the name can't be used. I wonder if eso could do the same thing.

Honestly, even when you can easily type that name it's such an annoying process. We really should be able to just select report from their name in chat.

It would be very easy to determine hwo they were with that information. With the server, zone, and time, it would be very easy to narrow down the list of characters since Zenimax can tell where we were and when in recent history. In Cyrodill, the campaign would be important information as well. They can probably narrow it down to a specific instance if there is more than one instance in play for a PvE zone.

So, this is fairly simple and straightforward.

And yep, there are videos of players doing that and using a speed hacks. AI can detect some of this. I had a friend get a suspension for using a speed hack in their home instance. They were showing someone that the hack worked. Granted, I took their story of innocent use with a grain of salt since I see no point in having such software to start with.

It is difficult to report someone via ingame when they have a barcode (IIIIllllIIIIlll) username. I've tried and I wasn't able to do it due to the difficulties of spelling out the name of the user.

My advice for ZOS is to blacklist barcode names.

I’ve seen those guys on PS NA GH in the past but never had any problem with them. Maybe it’s like the other players said they’re good and other players just get mad for losing to them. They could have changed the name to stop harassment instead, just a thought.
