Players Aren't Playing the Objectives on New Battlegrounds

I play solo 8v8 matches, and I constantly see this issue: most players simply don't play the objectives. They literally ignore nearby Chaos Balls or flags and just prefer to stay in the middle of the map, fighting endlessly. It's as if they've never played battlegrounds in this game before and have no clue what to do.

Sure, in the past, there were always some players who intentionally treated every match like a deathmatch, but they were much less common. Now, it feels like every team only has 2-3 players who actually care about completing objectives.

Why is this happening?

    Confirmation bias.

Sounds like every battleground I've ever been in, in every MMORPG I've ever played.

These are battle... grounds... players, most anyway. Come here to battle. You can't battle a flag or a ball or a relic. That's why

It would help if "PvP Kill Feed" defaulted to OFF so that players can see chat.

I've generally found my teams at least mostly focused on the objectives. I send casual reminders like "headed to new flag" or "we can win if we hold", stuff like that, without telling people what to do.

I believe the situation would be much better if the scoreboard was based on objectives. But unfortunately in any mode we only have the KDA

    Why is this happening?

Because fighting other players is the fun part of PvP.

Thus, there always has and always will be a portion of players who ignore objectives in order to simply fight other players. This goes for every game that has PvP, not just ESO.

People naturally want to PvP not PvSitting on an objective.

I don't understand this either. Recently I was playing and was literally the only one who captured the flags. And the teammates didn’t even try, not only to capture more flags, but they also didn’t defend the ones they had already captured... Just... why?

Not fun is it? Killing other players is fun. You should try that. It makes battlegrounds fun.

Literally every high MMR 4v4v4 battleground prior resulted in 2 teams playing TD and the third team ratting off to objectives.

    Nothing new here.

I'm coming back to PvP after a multiple year hiatus. The kill feed was driving me crazy because it was drowning out helpful messages from teammates. I didn't even realize you could turn it off (I didn't see a checkbox for it in the chat options window!), so thank you for cluing me into this setting. I'm disabling the kill feed first thing when I log in tonight.

Yea it's frustrating when you know the team is definitely going to lose because no one cares about objective...

For those that said they want to fight other players as in PVP, I thought there's plenty of opportunities to do so when you hold a flag or capture a Chaosball, no?

Holding an objective makes you the priority target for every enemy player. Which is typically reduces how fun trying to fight is. (Chaosball is even worse because it will also be damaging you)

P.s. I always play for objectives in PvP games. I merely am pointing out reasons why other people may forgo that (Based on my interactions with such players)

That said, I've been meaning to get around to farming kills, since I need a bunch more Arcanist kills to unlock the dye to use for my Arcanist...

It just shows that modes themselves aren't much interesting for the general player base, also some can grind out achievements not related to the mode they're in etc. that completely fine as those are casual matches where you decide what you're playing.

What is the purpose of playing objectives? Like generally, what an average player would gain from a win in the battlegrounds? Leaderboards don’t matter, all top places are healers with hundreds of hours per month spent in game, you will never catch up with them.
Winning gives you only two things: slightly more AP (which most people regularly playing PVP have millions already) and the frustration that instead of having fun and fighting other people you’ve spent 15 minutes standing at the flag doing nothing.

Oh no. This can‘t be true. People told me objective matches succumbing to death matches is only a thing in 4v4v4

Seems Like nothing changed. Fighting is fun and the shorter respawn Timers kind of remove the penalty for death.

Okay but for everyone saying it's more fun to fight...don't y'all have normal Cyrodiil, Imperial City, and duels for that? It seems kinda cruddy to ruin other peoples' experiences who actually want to do the game mode when you can literally go fight other people in any of the other PvP modes there are.

    :O

Alot of people don't care about rewards and want to just play the game without playing the game (not standing on flag).
Making a game fun should be a priority. Making a game balanced should not come at the expense of fun.

Some players only want to smash(deathmatch). They do not realize, or are too dumb to realize, that tactics play a huge part in PvP as well(or should). But they just want to smash, regardless of the consequences for the other teammates(similar to how fake roles/speedrunners treat groupmembers in dungeons).

As long as there is a small part of the PvP population who throws/purposely loses objective games, noone else even wants to PvP. That is not even discussing balance and build issues, which also plague PvP.

Endresult is, barely anyone PvPing. As long as PvP is made for PvPers, it will fail. If ZOS can get PvE'ers to enjoy PvP, the PvP population would skyrocket. The problem with this is, PvE'ers never have/get a say in anything PvP related, so nothing about PvP will change for the better.

PS: Have you seen the reactions to the new BG's, many players who enjoyed the tactics and dynamics that three teams brought are highly negative about the new two teams format. Lopsided matches, spawnkilling, team is screwed if one player dies, etc. That is not PvP, that is just bringing players to the slaughter to satisfy the needs of the few 'I-only-deathmatch' players.

Cyrodil? You mean Ballgroup vs Door mode?

Imperial City? You mean gank the people who are farming PvE objectives mode?

Duels? Sure. But you have to specifically go out of your way to find people who are willing to duel and then it's only 1v1.

BG's are the easiest way to get PvP and can provide it in group format. Thus, people who just want to go fight other players will be drawn there.
