Got an alert that ESO64.exe wants to modify my UserSettings.txt

My malware protection warned me that eso64.exe wants to modify mentioned file inside the users/User/documents/Elder Scrolls folder.

For the moment I ignore this message. What to do about it? An official statement would be great. Thanks!

That's the settings for eso. If you don't let it alter the file, changes you make to in game settings will probably not save across sessions. I'm not sure why you've set your permissions so locked down that an app can't modify its own settings file, but the outcome is likely to be awkward.

It is quite aggressive detection, that file contains all user settings made through Options menu in game (+some more hidden, like skip intro).

The interesting thing is: I did not get this alert ever until today. And I did not change anything on my malware...

If your malware app had an update, some of the settings might have changed/been added to.

Those "malware apps" and 3rd party virus scanners are basically malware apps themselves. They're way too aggressive and you don't really need them over the built-in Windows Security.

But keep using them if you want.

Agree, programs need to be able to edit files in its folders. its should not in other folders outside temporary ones.

ESO addons can't modify that file, it's not allowed by the ESO UI API (the only interface the addons are allowed to use).

First, we accepted a new license agreement, now the program is trying to make unknown changes to our computer. Maybe we missed something and we should be on our guard. :#

addons modify ONLY the state inside the game. All saves (AddOnSettings.txt and the contents of the SavedVariables folder) are made by the game itself

A game attempting to modify its own settings file is not something to freak out about.

    It is not "unknown"

Actually, when you accept the new license agreement, the UserSettings.txt file is updated to reflect that. Otherwise, it just asks every time you play.

The addon only changes the slider, but the writing to the UserSettings.txt is done by the game executable. Addons are incapable of modifying any files except those under the addons directory.

Sounds like it's time to tweak your anti-malware settings so it understands that ESO is allowed to update its own settings file.

I'm suddenly wondering if your anti-malware program alerts you when it wants to update its own settings file, or does it just go ahead and do it without warning you about it?

Personally, I don't entirely trust third-party anti-malware programs, because they might be like Trojan horses themselves-- very attractive looking so you'll download and install them, then agree to give them all sorts of elevated permissions so they can start infecting your computer, transmitting your keystrokes to foreign agents, turning your computer into a zombie, etc.

It strikes me as funny how a lot of people don't trust big companies like Microsoft with their information, yet won't hesitate to give elevated permissions to third-party "security" programs. /shrug

The launcher also modifies your explorer.exe file.

    From the LibHistoire LUA:

    function GuildHistoryAdapter:GetGuildHistoryCacheMaxDays(category)
    local days = GetCVar("GuildHistoryCacheMaxNumberOfDays_" .. MAX_NUMBER_OF_DAYS_CVAR_SUFFIX[category])
return days and tonumber(days) or DEFAULT_MAX_CACHE_DAYS
    end

    function GuildHistoryAdapter:SetGuildHistoryCacheMaxDays(category, days)
    SetCVar("GuildHistoryCacheMaxNumberOfDays_" .. MAX_NUMBER_OF_DAYS_CVAR_SUFFIX[category], days)
    end

Any local settings (things like keybinds are stored server side) such as camera angle, show combat text and guild history settings are stored in the local file being UserSetting.txt, and can be retrieved with GetCVar or altered with SetCVar. You can also get/alter server side settings through GetSettings/SetSettings.
