Improvements to the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel.

The shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel should be modified to be similar to the map of The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena.

d19o8eqemdps.jpg

This map is a scan of the original The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena map, I got this map by purchasing The Elder Scrolls Anthology.

Why should the shape of The Elder Scrolls Online map be similar to The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena map?

The events of The Elder Scrolls Online take place during the second era.
No change occurs to the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel during the second era.
The shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel changes during the events of The Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall.
The shape of the continent of Tamriel changes again in the time period between the end of The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion and before the story of The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim begins.
In The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena it is specified that the entire continent of Tamriel has been explored except the center of the imperial province of Black Marsh, that exploration happened during the Septim dynasty of emperors.
In the history books that can be found in the games, it is mentioned that the Aldmers of the Summerset Isles explored the shores of the continent of Tamriel during the Merethian era.

For all these data, I have taken the map of The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena as the reference for the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel during The Elder Scrolls Online.

It is possible that the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel underwent changes during the Merethian era, the first era, and the first centuries of the second era.
Keep in mind that the events of The Elder Scrolls Online take place before the events of The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena.
If the map of the continent had that shape in The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena, it is specified that almost the entire continent is explored in The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena and no event occurred that changed the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel before The Elder Scrolls 1 Sand.
The shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls Online should be similar to the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena.

This is the current shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls Online.
This is the map of the continent of Tamriel updated in 2024.

This is the map of the continent of Tamriel.
In the map list, this map is named “Tamriel”.

zn4rk2j6lwxr.png

This map is missing many islands and the shape of the islands that appear on the map is different from those on The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena map.
The shape of the continent of Tamriel is different from that of The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena map.
The bodies of water of Cyrodiil and the other bodies of water that the continent of Tamriel has are not represented on this map.

What improvements could be applied?
Change the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel to a shape similar to the shape of the map of the continent of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena.
Add the missing islands to the mainland map of Tamriel and change the shape of the islands that are present in the current map of Tamriel.
Add missing water bodies represented on the map of the continent of Tamriel.

This is a handmade map by me and I have scanned it to obtain the following image.
I have based it on the map of The Elder Scrolls 1 Arena.

47d223e27jct.png

This would be the map of the continent of Tamriel in the year 582 of the second era.
Why do some of the territories of Cyrodiil now belong to Elsweyr and the Altmeri Dominion in the year 582 of the second era?
In the year 582, the Altmeri Dominion conquers some lands that previously belonged to the Empire of Emperor Leovicus, taking advantage of the succession chaos in Cyrodiil.

This can be seen on the Cyrodiil PVP map, one of the Altmeri Dominion bases is located south of the city of Bravil.

It's clear you've put a bit of work into this! Just a few thoughts, though:

Firstly, I think that your first map was produced for Oblivion? The map for Arena was a much rougher shape.

About the rationale; the differences between maps are due to limitations, different developers, and sometimes just plain error. Just personally, I don't really like the idea of contriving lore to explain away real world errors: it often feels forced, it cheapens lore, and it sets a precedent that errors don't matter, because you can just "hand-waive" it all away.

I agree with the spirit of your argument broadly, and I'd LOVE to see ZOS fix their map of Tamriel in the 2nd era. I don't think any "in-world" explanation is very satisfying (though there's been attempts). Its just a borked map that some real-world person borked.

I think ZOS thinks its serviceable, and they will continue to adjust it bit-by-bit as they need to. i.e., with new zones. But who knows.

Had time to check it now (I just had to look...), it's from the Pocket Guide to the Empire, 3rd edition, which was indeed included with Oblivion. Or to be more precise, it's a slightly altered version released with the TES Anthology with a few typos corrected.

I wonder if some of it is like the way old world maps of our time are different because navigation and measurements were harder to do centuries ago.

I would hate for the map to get changed at this point. I actually wanted to use that awesome "corrected" map addon - but after 7 years of playing, it was just too confusing to not have things the way they'd always been....

I get it and I wish the map looked better (where's Winter hold and why is Elswery not complete), but on the other hand maps are dependent on the person who drew it.

I can say for sure that the font on this map has not been used before Oblivion and that the map (without city names) was depicted for the first time in the "Pocket Guide to the Empire, 3rd Edition" which was part of the Collectors Edition of TES4 Oblivion.

Maybe you confuse it (or it's even described wrongly in the Anthology?) because the chapter in the Pocket Guide where the map was depicted was called "Arena Supermundus". This is Latin and basically compares the world to a big arena (which is further explained in that chapter). It is not related to the game TES1 Arena.

This, for comparison, is the map as depicted in the 1st Edition of the Pocket Guide, which was part of the manual of TES Redguard (so, also not TES 1 Arena):

    Different depiction, different font.

I definitely wouldn't mind an updated in-game map that syncs up with the geography of the mainline game maps...

... but it has been ten years and isn't really a high-priority item. I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. If anything, I'd bet on toggable hip-plates before an in-game map update (and toggable hip-plates will happen around the same time that pigs learn to fly :-P ).

the Elder Scrolls Anthology was released after Skyrim and had new versions of all the main games' maps.

it is Arena's map, just a new version. unless uesp documented it incorrectly?

Ah, now I get it, after I had a look at the UESP page:
    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/General:The_Elder_Scrolls_Anthology
Yes, indeed this map, in the updated version, seems to have been included with the disk for Arena in the Anthology (I don't own the Anthology, so I can't verify; I have no need to own the Anthology since I've been playing TES since Arena and own all games as originals).

But that doesn't mean it was the original map from the clutter that was part of TES1 Arena's box during release back in 1994. Not even remotely. It was a completely different style back then. The map in the Anthology, while included with the Arena disk (and also the Redguard disk, as can be seen on the linked page above), is based, as I said, on the TES4 Oblivion map. Probably because they wanted something more beautiful and detailed than the maps the first few games actually had back then.

So this is still incorrect, sorry:
