BG rework - patch note vs reality

The battlegrounds rework patch note clearly states: "Four of the new maps are tailored for 8v8, while three maps are better suited to 4v4 due to their smaller size. Players can join these queues at level 50, whereas players between levels 10 and 49 have their own level-banded 8v8 matches. These queues support solo, duo, trio, or full group participation, but not Large Groups."

However, in reality, we get this:

A group of three players has to hope that a solo player specifically changes their queue from the faster solo queue to the slower group queue to fill their group and even get a match at all. This system is not going to work, just as it was failing with the previous three-team split system.

    Friends want to fight together.
    Solo players do not want to be steamrolled by coordinated groups on comms.

    You simply can't create a queue that will satisfy both kinds of players. Simple solution could be allowing duos to queue to solo queues and keep group queue to 3 and 4s, but then 3s and 4s will feel ostracised.

    That was how it originally came out on PTS, but that was changed halfway through to make separate solo and group queues due to the feedback on the PTS forum.

    As to which is better... it seems to be a matter of who you ask. Splitting queues means that it's harder to find a match, but it means it's less likely that a solo player would be matched against an organized group. And as we've seen, different people have different ideas on whether it's better to have to wait longer for groups (or not be able to play with friends) versus not having to worry about being stuck in a losing battle against optimized premades.

    People gave feedback on this on the PTS to not make too many seperate queues but ZOS has been fantastic this PTS cycle to ignore and go against what people are asking for. The ideal solution would´ve been to have:
    * 8v8 (no mmr/rank, any group size)
    * 4v4 solo (with mmr/ranks)
    * 4v4 group (with mmr/ranks)

    So ye, enjoy the honeymoon phase where people are curious about the new update, after that BG´s will go back to how it was before. And ZOS still hasn´t fixed the main thing that needed to be fixed: The mmr/ranking system.

    This is a product of the abysmally short PTS cycle and ZOS's fixation of keeping new content updates completely under wraps until a month before release. There's not enough time to incorporate player feedback during these cycles. Things like this need to be announced in detail at the beginning of the year so it has enough time to incorporate player feedback.

    Valid complaints were brought up during the first week of PTS of mixing group and solo queues which is how it was originally. There were suggestions to have competitive to have separate queues, but for 8v8 to only have 1 with a max group size of 2. ZOS didn't have the ability to make this change due to lack of time, so they gave the next best alternative as to not immediately kill it out the gate while they go back to the drawing boards to incorporate feedback. Earliest it can be done is in march, but knowing ZOS, it's probably not going to be incorporated until august the earliest.

    Yes you can, thats why mmr exist. Groups by default have it higher and are matched with other groups and only very good solo players are used as fill ups to the group fights.
    And not like every duo, trio or even full group in q is super pro. There is many group of friends that arent fantastic at the combat but want to play together and matched against 4 decent solo players they could still lose after a decent fight.

    Thats a terrible change that invalidates this whole rework.

Besides if the solution is strict MMR, then you can't have fun matches with your friends either if they are all over the MMR spectrum anyway.

    So I am very happy how this turned out. Otherwise I would have dropped this mode entirely out of my rotation. And judging by the heavy feedback I am not the only one.

    While you may have had faster queues, you would also see a drop in player numbers for this mode as well if they chased away all the solo players. Which is not what is needed right now for this mode.

    I play enough multiplayer games to know how coordinated stacks can ruin a lot of other peoples enjoyment. And solo players should not suffer because some others have to wait a bit long for the queue to pop for a balanced and fair match.

Now every side has the same RNG to have a good or bad team composition and synergy.     A group in comms is almost always going to dominate against 4 randoms unless those 4 randoms are truly exceptional.

    This suppose to be an mmo game, second m standing for multiplayer. Not single player game. Grouping and providing engaging activities for those groups should be at the core of the game. If its not, they will move to different games.
    For far too long ESO cultivated solo hero mentality in its players which lead to degradation of group content.
    Original version of bg rework was supposed to remedy that, instead its the same dysfunctioning system, just with 2 teams instead of 3. Its going to be dead just as it was so far.

    I play in groups for PvE all the time. I do world bosses, world events, nymic, trading and trials. For PvP I only play battlegrounds and I prefer to solo queue and no one I know likes to play PvP anyway.

    Also the way they implemented it we both have what we want. I can enjoy fair solo matches and you can play with your friends. We both give and take. Games like Warzone, Apex, Fortnite etc all have solo, duo, trio and 4 squad queues for those that want it. One group of players should not suffer for the fun of another group.

    And it is too late not to cultivate the 'solo hero mentality'. Where do you think most of the money comes from? Pretty sure it is housing or the people who are paying every year for the next chapter of Skyrim Online. I think ESO is great because it caters to many playstyles and all type of players which is great.

    Anyway we have fought this battle the past weeks on the PTR forums and the solo queue is the result what is implemented of overwhelming feedback from solo players to have 2 queues.

    I'm afraid nobody gets anything out of that. Duos and trios will still not get pops. Its the same not working system, just 2 teams instead of 3, but partial groups will still not get fill ups and group content will remain mostly dead just as it is now.

    Make 4v4 ranked and open for groups.

    Make 8v8 unranked and only for solos.

    Nope I like it this way and many other on the PTS do as well. If you want to play in a coordinated group on discord in battlegrounds then you should face other coordinated groups in a voice chat.

    If I get home and want to do a couple of battlegrounds solo with randoms I shouldn't face a team coordinating ult dumps and set procs, that's how you kill the population. I shouldn't have to coordinate my schedule with other people to enjoy a gamemode. To scorepush or raise my rank on a leaderboard sure, but to be forced into that for every instance of battlegrounds is a surefire way to make sure people avoid it.

    No mate, you kill population by making them wait 30-60 min for one pop.
    And again, mmr exist, weak solo players should face other weak solo players. Strong solo players wouldnt mind filling up to group fights. Also its very silly, artificial separation, pretending like its totally different ppl. Regular group player is all the same solo player when his team mates arent online. Also both group and solo can vary greatly in quality, hence every other game uses mmr system to actually match players around their own skill bracket.
    Just because some players naively believe that by keeping it separate they get to complete there 1bg daily reward easier shouldnt lead to killing off the game mode activity for those who want to spend more time (actual play time, not q time) on it.

    Reworking BGs when no one asked them to was already a bad idea, but when I heard how many queues there were going to be on top of that.... well, it's kind of hard to not see the feature completely doomed.

    I've said it before, but imagine waiting 20+ mins for a match just to get the mode where you only have one life and then spectate the rest of the match after you die.... bet people are just going to love when that happens.

    I shared this feedback throughout the entire PTS cycle and got drowned out the whole time.

    The group queue is 99% casual duos. They are not try-hards, sweaties, nor are they "coordinated" with their sets or play styles. They're just friends that want to share a game together, which is the whole point of playing an mmo rpg like this.

    The fact is that ZOS' previous actions to fracture the BG community back in 2020 (maybe 2021, can't remember which patch it was) slowly dismantled the BG community to the point where only a fraction of a percent of the ESO playerbase actually participates, and the group queue is so worthless, that there's barely enough duos to ever queue for the mode during primetime US hours to ever get a queue to pop.

    There's no one left to argue for this. People either stopped queuing together or switched over into the solo queue and now are so fixated into it, they are unwilling to give their support for anything that might fairly combine the queuing populations.

    ZOS needed to communicate this months ago and get feedback started then. They didn't do that, so now yet another patch goes to live with poorly thought out content.

    This. I used to run a PvP guild focused on IC, BGs, and dueling before they initially made battlegrounds solo queue only some years ago.
    The people in my guild weren't super coordinated teams with builds that built off of each others, they were all just relatively decent players trying to do what they enjoyed in the game together. Most of those people quit the game and never came back even after they added group queue as a separate option.

    Even when I sometimes queue as a duo group, I truly don't see much of a difference between playing solo vs not. If anything, I think what leads to the most unbalanced fights is that there is no proper role queue (ie one team gets a dedicated healer and the others don't).
    And seeing Zenimax make the choice to divide the playerbase up even more.... it's really just comical at this point.

    Exactly this. My entire guild gave up on eso when they messed BGs the last time. Now we returned few weeks ago eager for the rework to breathe new life into the game mode, just to see it assassinated and not deliver what was promised.

    This. I used to run a PvP guild focused on IC, BGs, and dueling before they initially made battlegrounds solo queue only some years ago.
    The people in my guild weren't super coordinated teams with builds that built off of each others, they were all just relatively decent players trying to do what they enjoyed in the game together. Most of those people quit the game and never came back even after they added group queue as a separate option.

    Even when I sometimes queue as a duo group, I truly don't see much of a difference between playing solo vs not. If anything, I think what leads to the most unbalanced fights is that there is no proper role queue (ie one team gets a dedicated healer and the others don't).
    And seeing Zenimax make the choice to divide the playerbase up even more.... it's really just comical at this point.

    Or a team gets 2-3 dedicated healers... because there is no role matching at all.
    When i solo q i do it mostly as a healer, feels like more impact for the team results than yet another solo hero dd running on its own and dying 3km away from nearest team mate.

    I just got back from a BG in which 15 players had to wait 3+ minutes to start and, since 1 player was missing, the BG closed LOL. You have to be completely *** to come up with an idea like this and, even worse, to implement it into the game.

    First solo bg:
    - 2 healers in the team
    - upon using all lives we had person alive standing in spawn and the rest of us get threaten with bg kick for inactivity, while we are dead and cant do anything...
    Second bg out of nowhere kicked out to char selection mid fight.
    Third bg waiting inside 5mins for fill up of players, instead getting ported only after enough players confirmed.
    Outstanding "rework". Cant wait to see more amazing stuff!

    Weird I am doing solo queue 8vs8 and I am having matches within a minute.

    Having a blast. It is high octane action and the balancing seems good now each team fighting for the last points in an exciting standoff.

    For the group queue they should match groups like 2+2+4 or 5+3 etc. Maybe something isn't working yet.

    Solo queue is awesome. It used to be different where 3 people had 38 kills and all the others 6. It is these kind of people who turned solo players against playing to groups. And maybe you won't exploit it, but trust me, some others will and start farming us.

    Totally different to my experience. Had a few 8v8 (solo) and most of them where just one team stomping the other. Trains colliding like in cyrodiil. No possible smaller battles in the outskirts. Had three 4v4 (solo). 1st cancelled for not enough players, 2nd was well balanced, last was again totally one sided.

    Already missing 3 team BGs.

    As expected this system doesnt work. Single person refuses q or misses it during port and 15 other ppl is stuck for 5 mins waiting for that magical solo person who chose to q group only bgs instead much faster pops to solo specific ones...
    Over 2 weeks of nearly daily bgs for 2-3 hours and about 1/3 of our games never start. Players wont stick with such system for long.
