Weird observation when parsing on the trial dummy using skills

I did again some training session on the trial dummy in our guild home and I took a close look:

Sometimes, som skills on my bar greyed out as if I had not sufficient ressources and I could not cast it. I checked: Both my magicka and my stamina bar were maybe around 75% min when this occured. Recurrently.

This is so weird!

Some skills require a target to cast and are greyed out otherwise. Could it be that your char looked slightly away from the dummy in that moment?

I cannot exclude entirely but the dummy is actually pretty large. I would perhaps rather say it greys out when my crosshair is not sideway but is not exactly on a body part of that dummy.

Most of the time I have tabbed the dummy too...

Why only most of the time?

It also depends on the skill and the environment.

There are some skills (Templar shards, notably) that will get borked by elevation changes, so if the dummy is set on a platform instead of the standard floor it may interfere with the targeting.

Also if there’s anything behind you and your crosshair thinks you’re targeted on a distant object, it may think you’re targeting that and give you an out of range error.

    Welcome to Australian ping!
This has always been an issue for me due to a combination of desyc, server performance and skills. It is also more common in skills with a channelling time (especially templar jabs).
And it has definitely gotten worse over the last couple of years.
How I get around this is to find a time of day when the server is running at its best. So I don't parse during (Aussie) primetime hours when the server is busy logging prog groups out of Rockgrove.
The type of guild hall also makes a difference. I find parsing in my smaller, less decorated guild or a fellow guildie's house to have fewer issues with this.
And as I said earlier, it's also the spammables you use. I've noticed a big difference with templar and other classes. I find that if I'm greying out after jabs, I need to slow down my key inputs to allow for the higher lag.
It also gets worse the longer the parse continues, with animation locks and greyed out skill bars becoming dominant towards the end of the parse.
My only advice in the final case is to increase your dps to reduce your parse time! :D

Yes, the targeting is really bad sometimes, be sure to hard-target the dummy before starting and it will help some.

I apologize for my ignorance, but I've heard this before. What does hard-target mean?
Sometimes when I'm fighting the tho'at shard dragon it's difficult to target it with my heavy attacks, and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, and how to correct it.

Could it be that you cast something with a cast time? Doesn't that grey other stuff while being cast?

On console the default for this is pressing and holding r3 when your cross hair is over the enemy, it will get a white outline. Its often called tab targetting so I'm guessing that on pc it is bound to tab by default, but you may want to check that

Yes, this is what I do, I don’t know what the equivalent is on PC.
