This is the sixth double drop trials event I can remember, with Sunspire, Kynes Aegis, Rockgrove, Dreadsail Reef, and Sanity's Edge being the previous 5. Of these six, I think this might be the best one to date, and I think a lot of that has to be credited to the Group Finder.
Events with double drops in trials bring out the best and worst in players. The upside is a lot of players new to trials get a chance to run with more experienced players, hopefully learning mechanics and growing the endgame base. The downside are the players who essentially are there for free carries. The DSR, Kynes Aegis, and Rockgrove events were plagued by that problem. I saw far less of that in Sanity's Edge and even less this year with Lucent Citadel. VDSR is on another lever as that trial is a pug killer for everyone who doesn't know mechanics and refuse to use comms, so its the outlier here.
It could be because Lucent Citadel is easier than VKA and VRG, and feels shorter than VSE. It could be because the power creep has upped the DPS of players, especially experienced players, which really shows up in a place like VSS. It could be the mechanics in VLC are easier once you understand them. But I really think a lot has to do with GF.
CP levels, requiring comms, and knowledge of mechanics weeds out a fair number of players that would otherwise kill a run. If one of those players sneaks through, I think the group feels more justified in kicking the ones who queued in spite the requirements. VDSR has benefitted greatly from this, which seems to have carried over to VLC. I saw far more clears in VLC within a reasonable amount of time during this event than in the last 5 events.
On the flip side, if someone posts "Prog group" or "Teaching mechs" I know ahead of time that the run will take a while, which helps group avoid players dropping out mid-run with or without a nastygram over chat on their way out.
One change I would like to see made to GF based on this experience is the ability to see who is in the group before queueing. Seeing the organizer/crown is helpful, but if I can see who the tanks, healers, or DDs are, that would make it even easier to see which groups to join. I play on PS NA and you see a lot of the same players, which helps you know how serious/unserious and how long the run will be.
