Skills not firing consistently in gamepad mode (PC)

I have been having issues with my skills not firing off unless I am up very close to the target. This seems to be happening a lot now and I am not sure what has changed. It's beginning to become frustrating. Has anyone else noticed this?

I've found that wireless devices tend to exacerbate any lag issues with the game.

Unless you're in Cyrodiil, in which case it's probably not due to a wireless device! :D

That's just playing the game in general. Not specific to game pad. My favourite is when you stun someone on low hp and go to execute them. But the game waits for them to breakfree before it will allow spin to win to fire. Off into the distance they streak or fossilised and whip to the face.
Here $15, goat mount please. Not gambling or paying 45 : lol :
20% base speed for high ping players.
Streak moves you faster then speed cap.
They should of made 4v4v4v4 instead of 8v8.

Or when someone is in execute and the game waits for someone else to get the kill before allowing your ultimate to activate. Then you look stupid hitting a corpse with a dawn breaker.

I noticed early this year that I started to have to double press every button to get that skill to fire. Stupid thing about it, is that I can press it once, interact with something else (eg set a ballista on fire) and then press the skill button again and it will work. Never used to be like that for the first 9 years of playing. And then there's the new controller "enhancement" they added in a few months ago - which causes janky lag when I swap bars or try to move. I didn't buy the game through Steam but I'm forced to play it through Steam because otherwise my additional mappable buttons on my expensive PS Pro controller won't work - so I can't disable the Steam input.

If I wanted to do any kind of dungeon, arena or trial nowadays it just wouldn't be possible any longer.

    Edit: I play wired.

ZOS added its own native controller support earlier this year. IMO, it's not as good as whatever third-party solution they were using before. For example, unless you only plug the controller in (for wired) after you start the game, you have to press the button way longer than usual to mount. As far as skills go, there have always been delays. For some reason, the skill I have on Y sometimes doesn't fire. Bar swapping sometimes doesn't happen. Unfortunately I have to use a controller because of an RSI I have, otherwise I'd use the mouse and keyboard. I don't have any problems using a gamepad in other games I play.

The exact issue I am experiencing is that the skills won't even light up on the skill bar unless my crosshair is very close to the target.

I was having bad trouble with the Ozezan the Inferno boss in Scrivener's Hall. It was like that big boss had a very tiny hitbox or something. I had to be right up on it to even get my skills to fire and even then, it moves so my skills would lose lock and not fire. I don't know if other players skill visuals are interfering or what, and it wasn't just that boss. It has been happening with mobs too.

    Greetings,

This thread has been moved to the PC Technical Support section, as it is better suited there.

    Thank you for your understanding.

Could you try temporarily switching to keyboard and mouse to see if the skill lag continues to persist?

I’ve never played the game with keyboard and mouse before. I’ll need to learn how to first. I’m completely lost with that interface.

If you have a different controller you could try testing skills with that as well. This will help in determining where the skill latency might be coming from.

It isn't skill latency. It is the crosshairs not lighting up the skills on the skill bar so the skills can be used.

Some targets have very small target box to hit, if you run a keyboard/mouse you will find the target much faster. At first it will be uncomfortable but get your keyboard adjusted with keybinding in the game. You will be able to get to the target faster with the keyboard/mouse combo. I have tried the gamepad controller and had the same problem, I don`t see how gamers can use it.

I find it tricky to target enemies while in the third-person view, especially at a distance, since there's a discrepancy between where my character is facing as far as the position of his body and where he's actually looking based on how I'm moving the mouse around. It isn't usually a problem for me since my character is a melee fighter who is usually up close with enemies, but I start having trouble when I use ranged attacks. My advice would be to switch to the first-person view during fights to see if that helps at all.

Another thing I recently became aware of is that skills do not fire until you release the key or button. That probably should have been obvious to me, because how else would the game be able to let you use light attacks, heavy attacks, or medium attacks (heavy attacks which are not fully-charged)? But I use heavy and medium attacks a lot more than light attacks, and what I've noticed is that when I try to use my skills while holding down the mouse buttons a lot, often there is a noticeable delay between when I try to fire off a skill and when it actually goes off, especially if I'm trying to execute a rotation of skills while also using heavy or medium attacks. In some cases a skill doesn't ever go off and I need to press the button again. This isn't lag in the usual sense of that word, but is more an issue with the queuing of commands-- and by issue, I don't mean a bug or glitch, but a difficulty that naturally arises from the way a series of commands can pile up in the input queue before they get processed, if that makes sense. It doesn't seem to be an issue unless you start holding down the mouse button a lot to do heavy or medium attacks, so if starts to become a problem then you might want to lift your hands away from the mouse and keyboard for a moment to stop the constant flow of input and let the command queue empty, then use light attacks while you fire off your skills and rotations.
