Companion boss leashing issue.

If you equip a companion with a ranged weapon, often they will draw World Boss aggro and proceed to run away as far as possible, forcing the boss to reset.

The only weapon that stops the leashing issue is a frost staff. All my companions except the tank use it.

I had that happen to me tonight in Elden Hollow II at the final boss-- Bastian reset the boss and I had to start the fight over. I kept trying to keep the boss aggroed, but my taunt was on my back bar, and the adds kept paralyzing me-- so when I tried to break free, swap bars, and taunt the boss, often I would be hitting the button on my front bar because the bar swapping didn't happen as expected for whatever reason (I accidentally swapped from back to front, or I tried to swap before I broke out of the CC, or something).

So I'm yelling at Bastian, yelling at the boss, yelling at the adds, while frantically trying to keep the boss aggroed while also breaking free of the adds' CC holds-- when suddenly my banker pops up. I hadn't even had him selected on my quickslots wheel, so I must have somehow been holding down Q while moving my mouse. All I knew was, there was no way in Oblivion I was going to dismiss my banker and let Bastian rejoin the fight! :D
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!

I really hope they fix that. @SpiritKitten is right in that frost staves are the only choice if you want your companion to be ranged. That is made even worse in that the only full 28m companion frost staff skill includes a taunt, making it inappropriate for a ranged dps companion.
PC NA(no Steam), PvE, mostly solo

Don't slot a taunt skill with a ranged weapon. If you're gonna give a companion a tank skill, give them a weapon appropriate for tanking. Taunting should only be used when the intent is to stand your ground. Ranged weapons/skills aren't conducive to that concept.

If you want your companion to taunt, then put a sword & board in their hands, give them some heavy armor, and voila. Especially Azandar. He's nearly unkillable in all but high end content.

You do not have to slot a taunt on any companion for them to steal aggro and leash the boss and reset the boss. It's been a problem since day one.

This is why I never equip medium armour on my companions, because the only thing more frustrating than having the boss reset, is having the boss reset 3 or 4 times during the same fight.

That's why I don't use ranged weapons for my little friends. I favour equipping them with a 2H sword for that reason.

You've got to recall them. It stinks that WB's have a setting that makes them chase the furthest ally for some reason. It's not about taunt or any of that, its just how the WB's work. They'll even go after healers if you aren't paying attention.

Companions work best when they complement the player, not reinforce them.

If you're playing as a damage dealer, it's really not a good idea to have a Companion specced as a damage dealer as well. That'll obviously lead to bosses going all over the place and companions continually running off unless you control them with the pet command keys. It's much better to spec a Companion as a tank.

Also, I know people think that tanks are useless in all content since all they do is hold bosses in your AoEs and not really do much damage themselves, but that does actually help your DPS if the boss is under control and stays in your DoTs and you don't have to stop parsing to dodge them when they come to you.

I keep all of my Companions as ranged DPS, but that's because I run a tank so the bosses never end up out of my control, and in most cases my Companions just stand there and outparse me. I can't say I've ever had a problem with a boss getting pulled out of range - most of my biggest problems are that Basti likes to stand out of range of his wall and ult, so I have to trap him in a corner and bring the boss to him so he'll get it off.

But as a tank, please don't give your Companion a frost staff. Or if you do, please for the love of Mauloch don't slot the Companion Frost Clench. Unlike the other taunt skills, Frost Clench does not have a restriction on in so Companions with a forst staff can and will steal taunt from actual tanks, and they can and will make us tanks really annoyed.
