QuakeCon Eso live Fail!

i don't want to see eso turn into nothing but end game idolization of teams like other e-sports thats not what this game needs to focus on. i want to see its story and lore develop not money put towards competitions or teams or other stuff these e-sports do that costs huge amounts of money. put that money towards the development of the chapters and making the game work good, not this stuff. more live streams with lore and other stuff- trial community is small, the community which loves quests and playing the lore is larger.

less of these big events, more of developing the game, please.

1 (One) trial community stream per year counts as "idolization of teams". [snip]

I’m not sure the commentary was very “e-sport”, it was just an energetic explanation of the trial mechanics (as they appear on HM but most appear on vet too) in general and some about the setups used by the groups. One More Clash, the community-hosted trial scorepushing competition that tries to introduce people of all skill levels to scorepushing and scorepushers (#not sponsored but it is pretty awesome) has more “e-sport” commentary than this did.

not getting me to watch on youtube i need twitch rewards to even bother watching trials people otherwise nope no twitch no watch

Absolutely this. ESO is not a very fun game to watch, as twitch viewership shows. There needs to be a reward or I'm definitely not watching.

I also feel that if their intention was to draw in new players during QuakeCon, showcasing trials in such a way was a poor choice. The commentary was the most off putting part about it, honestly. It wasn't a good representation of what ESO is really about at all, or how most or the community views/plays it.

This is a mess, it doesn't seem like ZOS knows what they are doing when it comes to marketing their game. They could have organized a tavern song party, a roleplay of jokes and random encounters, it could have enticed a lot of people but showing off trials doesn't seem like very enticing even for me...

For me, it wasn't that they showed trials- it was that they had e-sports style commentary. Showing trials isn't really a bad thing, as a large part of our community engages with them (I do as well) However, if a new player comes to ESO expecting it's community to be e-sports centered in the way CS GO and League of Legends is, they're going to be sorely disappointed as that is not what this community is at all. I felt it was a misrepresentation of what is really being sold here.

But I suppose they did it to generate "hype" just as they have before (Which will fall off when people realize that very few players actually sit and watch others play in trials without twitch drops as an incentive, nor do we have a lot of end game competitions unless an event like QuakeCon is associated with it.)

Hopefully anyone who decides to join the game based on that stream ends up enjoying it for what it is, and doesn't get disappointed by the infrequent occurrence of these commentated events.

While it would be nice if zos sponsored more raid competition type events, I do need to point out that the community puts on our own as well. The last one (a few weeks ago) had almost 300 participants and awarded 1 billion gold to the top 3 teams.

There HAVE been live streams with the loremaster. It's not as if that has been completely neglected.

There is a sizeable community that loves trials. I don't think any group in ESO is a majority. The majority of people insta-click all quest dialogue. At the same time, for other people, the quests are the only reason they play. Lots of players don't engage with housing at all. For a sizeable minority, housing is everything.

ESO does not spend much time catering to end-game PVE players, even to the point of going from 4 to 2 dungeons per year. But for Quakecon, it just makes sense. Why be bitter that a modicum of effort was spent on something you happen to not enjoy?

Spot on. Trials are a vital part of ESO and I am very glad to see them being showcased. Trial community might not be big, but it exist and it's as dedicated as lore enthusiasts. There is nothing wrong with presenting a bit more competitive side of the game, especially in the context. And if it can attract players interested in this type of gameplay, great! It's not just lorebooks and taverns...

I was thinking along the lines of sponsored events featuring commentary, not community events. For some e-sports fans, watching such events is as fun to them as playing the game is. I know several who don't want to participate in the events, but love watching them as though they are a sporting event, and are very into the teams that play, purchase their merch, ext. We don't really have that kind of thing going on within the ESO community. (Except, maybe, with certain ESO streamers, but you get a wider variety of gameplay there than competitive trials.)

I wouldn't mind if we did have more sponsored competitions, honestly. I'm not really interested in following or watching teams play competitively, but if other parts of the community would enjoy it, why not?

I agree that a single 1-hour competition each year for 2 years in a row-- during a convention where that sort of competition is apparently very appropriate-- does not threaten to turn ESO into an esports game.

As for any suggestion that a PvE activity cannot qualify as a "sport" because it isn't a PvP activity, what about sports such as racing, or swimming, or weightlifting, etc., where people compete against each other's performances (shortest times, most weight lifted, etc.)?

There's usually multiple streamers restreaming the competitor streams and commentating on them. Some are better than others, admittedly.

Pups didn't commentate this year as he was participating as a raid lead, unfortunately. Always enjoy his commentator streams (he has done similar with other player-led competitions in the past).

just wanna weigh in my 2 cents: ESO has many different communities. Just because you find watching trials as boring as watching paint dry doesnt mean it should never ever be allowed to have some time in the spotlight. I find housing/casual streams etc beyond boring to watch, but you don't see me going on the forums to complain about the ESO dev team showing off their new house etc being boring or complaining that this is why the game sucks or something. A tiny competition here and there for trials isnt going to turn ESO into an esport game, trust me. some much larger changes especially demographics would have to change (and even then, the game performance in terms of consistency/watchability would not hold up for it). This stuff isnt threatening any of your playstyles whatsoever. If you don't enjoy it, just dont watch it. or if you wanted just the drops from the stream, just.. have it on in the background. It's truly not that hard to just let people do what they want when they enjoy it.

I watched day later and I think it was very good.
Loved Puppies commentary, he is so good at it. And having Finn comment on game design while looking at the run through is cool too, to see whether we chose starts that match what devs had in mind. Apparently we did not get twins fight in MOL right for the longest time and we were supposed to stack twins this entire time :D
And 2nd teams UI was as close to base as it can get. 1st POV was a healer, we have to deal with all that info to be effective because we heal, buff and de-buff. Its 3 different tasks and base game tools are not effective at tracking buff de-buffs.
And plus there was Doom stream before that, ofc viewership dropped off, Doom has wildly different audience.
I love that ESO dev team is paying more attention to end game. Please do more of that.

The NA team had a ton of addons. The EU team had almost none and was using a controller. A very stark comparison. Also it was a score push run. Of course it was fast paced.

Having never been in or watched a well optimized group run a trial. I found that aspect interesting.

Only bad part was the stream crashed on twitch and I never saw them finish the final boss. Or get my drops 😒

Not sure those would make even a slightest of sense to make, trials at least honestly showing actual gameplay instead of heavily scripted scenes with barely any vfx they use for the promotional material. They desperately trying to capture mmo audience with such things but mmo audience is already made their minds about the game or waiting for the game to be fixed for them, so best promotion would be actually good patch notes and not this. Kinda hope I'm wrong and it was just a community building thing without extra though put into it.

Lack of clarity is something they can't really address much as visual style of the game is already decided upon and they are working in this environment. People who finding it a deal breaker aren't their target audience here anyway as it's less about actual vfx but more about paste and reaction times.
