what are their roles within the game? where can I view the ones I have unlocked?

Certain achievements give you wearable titles you can use in the game to display below your name.

To view the ones you've unlocked, press J to go into your journal. Then go to the achievement tab in your journal section, this is where they are all documented.

Not sure about a role, but they are in the journal I think. Up top the icon on the right.
