How do spells advance in level?

I have a templar who is 5. I've been using the first Radiant Light healing spell for the past 4 hours to heal myself and others and it's still Level 1. Whereas the second healing spell (don't remember the name) is level III, and I barely used it.
I have the same issue with my soul magic spell. I've been tagging mobs with it, since it has a DoT, and have used it to fill soul gems, but it's barely level 1 (just the tip of the blue advancement arrow showing)
Are there certain conditions that have to be met for spells to advance?

Once you morph a skill, it stops leveling (or if it levels it's extremely slow).

And to answer the general question: skill trees level when you have a skill from that tree in your action bar.

This is not true! I have a DragonKnight! I have morphed my spear skill (Names slipped me, had it in my head before i started to type) Twice since i lvl 1 - 12, as well as one other skill. It has yet to stop lvling. Now it does take far more times in use to lvl, i also think their is a skill lvl requirement depending on how many times you morph! I donno if its different form server to server but i play on US server! If you want send me an e-mail in game RoyalChaos. Keep in mind im a low lvl and im still learning myself, if you like lvl 20+..... i prolly can't help you LMAO!

You can only morph a skill once, so you're definitely mistaken.

I haven't morphed any skill yet. (they haven't reached level IV yet!) And these spells are on my hotbar. /shrug
