Hybridization and Minor Buffs

I did some testing and I discovered that it turns out that spells and feats will choose the HIGHEST of every stat basically no matter what, including crit. I know this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone, but let me explain why this is confusing.

ZoS never really went into detail how this works exactly. It was left up in the air whether if by choosing WEAPON damage for a SPELL if it also picked the WEAPON CRIT, or if it would select SPELL CRIT if it was also higher. Or, if it would still select the Crit value corresponding to the type of skill (Weapon crit for Stamina feats, Spell crit for Magicka Spells). After testing, it is quite literally the case that the game will select the highest stat no matter what. That means if your Weapon Damage is higher, but your Spell Crit is higher, it will select your Weapon Damage and Spell Crit.

Why does this matter? Because in update 33, ZoS explicitly stated that Minor Buffs provided by classes (E.G. DK Minor Brutality) would only apply the weapon or spell damage version for the sake of "preserving class contribution."

Here's the problem: If the game ALWAYS selects the higher stat, that means that a Nightblade applying Minor Savagery may as well ALSO apply Minor Prophecy. The reason being that even their MAGICKA abilities will scale off of their higher crit chance, which will be their WEAPON crit due to Minor Savagery.

So if anyone ever wondered if their Magicka abilities scaled off of their Weapon Crit, the answer is yes. If you also thought that doesn't make sense because then having separate buffs (Savagery vs Prophecy) is redundant, you are also correct.

Please just combine the buffs, ZoS.

Hybridization is still unfinished. It needs to happen. Asap.
The biggest issue are the potions, though.
If anyone here says: OH! But, PVP! I swear I'll ...

Thank you for the valuable input and respectfully recommend to discuss that aspect of ESO on the PVP forum.

You are correct, but in a way that requires context.

The only reason potions matter in this context is for the sake of buff stacking.

Let's say, for example, you play a Dragonknight with 4000 Weapon and Spell damage (unbuffed). Let's say they also decided to not run any skills that give them Major Brutality and Sorcery, and instead chose to get that buff from potions. The Dragonknight has a way to apply Minor Brutality, bringing their WEAPON damage to 4400, but not their spell damage. In this case, the game will use that 4400 for both their Magicka and Stamina abilitiles.

Now let's say that DK is a MagDK, and gets Major Sorcery from a Magicka Potion. That would bring their spell damage to 4800 while leaving their Weapon Damage at 4400. This means their abilities would then scale off of Spell damage. However, if that MagDK instead decided to pop a STAMINA potion, giving them Major Brutality, their Weapon Damage would then go to 5200, which would be the value used. It puts the MagDK in a weird spot where they need to use Major Brutality to get the proper benefit.

This doesn't happen very frequently because most builds incorporate some ability that gives them Major Brutality and Sorcery on demand. But if the idea is that the game will always use the higher value, including doing something weird like using a higher Weapon Damage along with a higher Spell Crit, then there really isn't much of a point in even separating the stats or buffs.

ZoS would be better off combining buffs, like combining Savagery and Prophecy and just calling the buffs Major and Minor "Precision" or something. It would also make the buff bar less clogged.

At this point they'd be better off cutting out the fluff. Get rid of "weapon" and "spell" damage and just condense it into one stat. Same with crit and the corresponding buffs. Would be more logical and less confusing to e.g. newer players too.

Yet I think resistance could stay splitted.

Thank you so much for this testing confirmation.

But can anyone also confirm whether minor sorcery buff on stamina Templar will stack with
Major brutality buff from weapon pots or from momentum? It should operate the same way as described for critical, but it’s kinda driving me crazy if I’m losing 10% spell/won dmg just cos of hybridisation incompletion and inaccuracy

If anyone knows a way to test and confirm plz do.

Also same question goes for magicka Nightblade, with major prophecy pots and minor savagery buff (they should stack but do they??)

Please ZOS… this is buggy, you should fix it fully. Combine the buffs, and give some new reason for each class to be useful in a trial/ content

Sorcery and Brutality do not stack. In your case your higher stat will be Weapon Damage and Spell damage is ~10% lower.
You could use Spell Power Potions and swallow the loss off Major Endurance.

This is what I meant by:

Hybrids will always suffer as long as new armor sets and classes are introduced
