So I am interested in playing a vampire build. what are some beginner tips?
and is it possible to keep a vampire at stage 3? if so how? what are the downsides for being a vampire stage 3?

Vampires are useless in PVE. In a lot of ways, they are an intentionally gimped build.

However, vampirism is almost required for PVP, and to be at stage 3 for the resistance passives. Pretty easy to stay there, just got to feed off of two NPCs. The downsides are the flame damage and cost of abilities, but they are outweighed by the Undeath passive.

Vampires have use in PvE, such as tanks for vampiric drain, but tanks would be stage 1.
One could make a vampire themed DPS build but it would only work in overland and not function in any dungeon or trial because the healer can’t heal you and that’s a problem for multiple reasons.

    To keep stage 3:

    1. You only feed when you're on stage 2. It's not convenient.
    2. Or, you buy the Furnishing Pack: Vampiric Libations from crown store and place it in your own house, and every time after you feed to reach stage 4, use the Basin of Loss to reduce it to stage 3.

If you're stage 3, you might as well go stage 4, which is much easier to maintain.

Stage 4 is very useful for overland travel and questing. It allows you to sprint for much longer distance and bypass enemies by stealth, and also useful in solo dungeons for speed running, or objective BGs or any PvP situation when you need to escape.

The downsides are not that important in PvE, and you can always unlock all vampire skills but don't feed anyone until you need it someday.
