Incredible disappearance in combat but how?

Xbox, NA server, Icereach campaign.

A dude had Gropthar’s hammer. He was already down to 50% health. I led him perfectly and he walked right into my cold fire ballista circle. I exited ballista and 2H rush him, then DK venom claw, 2H cleave. This took <5 seconds. During this I noticed he froze after ballista hit. He didn’t react. I couldn’t tell if my blows landed. He is a skilled player so I was surprised. Then he disappeared & took hammer with him!

At first I thought: keep recall stone but then realized 1) he’s inside enemy keep, 2) in combat. Not possible, right?

I start fighting his buddies for another 5 seconds and they were wary and held back. Lucky me because hammer reappeared but without him! At exact same place where he disappeared.

I grabbed hammer & ran like unskilled coward that I am. No death of him appeared in zone chat.

So what happened? A freak network trouble disconnect? I’ve have never seen one happen so cleanly or so fast.

it sounds like the player either crashed or disconnected for who knows what reason

being on console i find it unlikely they would easily be able to accept a queue pop in the middle of combat, since they would have to open the notification menu and accept it (they dont have any auto accept addons lol)

And there is no such thing as stealth plus letting go of hammer. Right?

I mean, damn, we’ve had dudes jumping off the 3rd floor to pass hammer inside keeps. I’d feel stupid if there was some easy way.

there is no way to drop the hammer besides death, full on disconnection, queuing out of the campaign, or straight up logging out

in your case specifically it sounds like the player who was wielding the hammer likely crashed or disconnect randomly, bad for them but very convenient for you lol

You may be surprised at a human’s speed with a controller. I see YouTubers open the Character menu almost instantly to show buffs but for me that takes like longer than most buffs even last. Which means that to this day, I have little idea what most of my buff icons actually are.
