Endless Archive - Is anyone else having trouble with the Ghostlights activity?

I'm talking about the 'Echoing Den', where you have to herd the Ghostlights. It's one of the last activities I need to do for the achievement and I'm really struggling with it on the 4th difficulty. Every other activity I've been able to do solo. But this one seems impossible. If I go too fast, the lights seem to just reset and go back to their original position. But if I slow down to make sure that doesn't happen, I can never complete it in time. Is anyone else having trouble with it? Has anyone been able to complete it solo, and if so what did you do? I'm really struggling with this one.

How do you herd the ghostlights? I run through them and they change color, but they don’t seem to either follow me or move away so that I could herd them.

They're supposed to follow you when they're green. If you go too far it seems they go back or stay put. They seem way too finnicky though.

Walk backwards (more like jog I guess, I didn't "RP walk" I just used S instead of W). I was having problems getting through the 3rd or 4th level of it until I realized I could walk backwards and be at the perfect speed. Worked like a charm.

THANK YOU! I just got the 4th difficulty with this advice and it worked. The first time I tried it I missed it because one of the lights left for some reason. But the second time I put one a piece of heavy gear (I'm running medium) to slow down a little and it worked.

I think the easiest way is to RP walk with the Wild Hunt ring on. It's about the perfect speed to never lose the lights.

Here's what I do to finish the last stage of the side event:

    - Pick up a ghostlight.
    - Take a step into the direction of the next nearest ghostlight
    - First ghost light will light up green and follow my step
    - Ghost light will return to it's natural blue color when it's about to leav my side and return to it's original place
    - Quickly take the next step to have it light up green again and follow me
    - Proceed this tedious dance up until you get to collect the next ghostlight nearby
    - Bring 3 ghost lights at once to the middle.
    - Repeat the whole process with the remaining three

It's a bit nerve wrecking since you got an invisible timer ticking in the background. But if you take action as soon as the collected ghostlight changes its color from green to blue again, you can do it.
(It's also my least favorite side event.)

Thanks everyone for the advice. I completed it on the last difficulty using the walking backwards strategy with one piece of heavy equipped. It feels like this activity was made with console and controller players in mind, as they can use the joystick to control their speed. It seems keyboard players have to look at what they have equipped, walk backwards, or do awkward dances like NoticeMeArkay mentioned.

I gotta try this...the step-by-step method is really annoying in comparison to your description.

i usually block walk to mostly prevent them from spazzing out

the activity itself is pretty easy, but very annoying because of the lights being spazzy

I'm on PC / keyboard with almost every speed upgrade (CP, gear, Wild Hunt + purchased EA speed boost) – too fast when running, too slow walking, blocking, etc. Can't figure out the right speed.

    Tried:
    1. walking with wild hunt & speed gear (too slow)
    2. sideways block-run with fast gear
    3. regular running with no-speed-boost gear
    4. running & pausing/slowing/block-walking (worst; too little control)
    5. running backwards

I *almost* got them with 2 and 5, wasn't fast enough. It's really annoying. I've finished all of the other ones except this and the Watcher one at 3/5.

I just want the antiquity lead rewards from portals but I heard that after you finish their highest difficulty, they only respawn at that? I hope not, that's like a punishment.

they do only spawn at the highest difficulty unless your running with a player who has not completed higher difficulties

the antiquity leads do not only come from the bonus stages, they can come from basically any of the reward chests that drop archive currency (so any boss, marauder, scamp, or bonus portal)

ive never really had too many issues with even the 5th difficulty of the ghostlights, if your doing in 2 person, each person only has to get 3 lights, if solo, do 3 lights on 1 side and 3 on the other

if you think block walking is too slow, then theres like a middleground of just tapping the movement key and move in short bursts so the ghost lights keep up

for me the ghostlight bonus stage is one of the easiest and least time consuming bonus stages lol

I wish block-walking or WH-walking worked. What *I think* is irrelevant, the time just runs out. Maybe I have to max out Steed's Blessing? I don't trust tapping; accidental dodge-roll can lose them all. (I'm glad that works for others, not for me.)

Leads: I know of the other sources. But solo, my only reliable source recently is Tho'at 1, because I can't beat her v2 solo and have zero interest in doing marauders etc in Arc 2+ (I'm truly only there for furniture). The scamps rarely spawn. I haven't been getting any leads from cycle boss chests.

These 2 unmaxxed portals keep spawning repeatedly. I don't enjoy it knowing I won't be able to do it, yet again. The others spawn very rarely now. So compared to earlier runs when there were more varied choices at doable difficulties, it now feels like a waste of time with fewer rewards. It's too bad.

    EDIT:
If this helps anyone else: Yes, upgrading Steed's Blessing CP allowed me to finally do this, using block-walking with my Wild Hunt + Adept Rider gear. That was the correct pace that was neither too fast or slow, with a tiny bit of running in between block-slowdowns. It was actually almost easy like this — and that's mostly what I was primarily wondering about:

I think different peoples' setups are really going to make a difference in whether this feels doable or incredibly frustrating. And by setup I mean everything from in-game CP and gear, to your actual physical setup like type of keyboard, whether you have any trouble with hand movement or disability, etc. Existing mixes of options within your own parameters that make this doable. If someone says "it's easy" or they never had any trouble with something — ok, but that's unhelpful because they may have completely different conditions. So it's good for us to explore different solutions.

I just tap the movement key, wait for them to follow, and keep going like that until I have them all. Nothing fancy like block walking or whatever. Just moving a little at a time, and I do the hardest difficulty solo almost every time. I use double-tap for dodge roll and I can't think of a single time when I ever dodge rolled by accident.

if there was no time limit though, there would be no way to fail it

all of the puzzles (except the destozuno quests) have some mechanism of being able to fail it (watcher, goat, and duel ones you can "die", the switch puzzle you get so many chances of running into the puddles)

i know, but it's a pretty short time limit.
and the switch puzzle isn't great either.

with the switch puzzle i can't always preview which tendrils a switch removes,
sometimes i click on the wrong one,
or click too late and die to the tendrils.
or i click on the wrong one just because the switches are super close together.
and when that happens a few times in a row i fail the puzzle.

and it takes quite a long while before getting another puzzle portal.

a few extra chances and a longer time limit would help a lot.

This and the tome one are the last 2 I need and I'm having trouble with both.

There just doesn't seem to be enough time to get all the lights solo but doing it duo helps.

The tomes though are a total pain. They give us 5 skills and no time to even see what they are. I am looking up hints on that now and hopefully can complete these before too long.

you can, for the most part

though i find companions to be fairly useless on most fights, and especially anything past like arc 3

the content itself was initially designed around a 2 person group and thats how it was balanced, and it shows because a companion is 100% not a replacement for another player and i dont think it should be counted towards the duo leaderboards even

The switch puzzle is actually easier for me on solo. I have the speed boost upgrade for the archive. I also have the steed's blessing green CP slottable, but I always keep that on regardless of content. I don't use anything else to boost my run speed. I find the switches that are the first one or two of the sequence, hit those, hit the rest, and then run.

I've yet to fail, even at the highest difficulty.

with 2 players it doesnt feel like having to rush

My way was to block walk with wild hunt, CP speeds and EA speed upgrade on, occasionally going out of it to speed things up for a sec, was done with 5th level without 10 sec message ever appearing.

Can walk the arena backwards to easily see what's you're loosing to kite forward to it when/if that happens.

I walk while tapping the block button and have previously been able to walk the entire circuit grabbing all of the orbs before heading to the middle. Now if I grab all of the orbs then one of the orbs leaves regardless of what I do, so I'm not sure if they changed it or if I'm just crazy. Between losing buffs when transforming into Watchers/Goats, and the finicky nature of the side areas, they just doesn't feel worth doing at the moment.
