How traits work for wookworking and blacksmithing?

Been trying to figure out why i couldnt use the trait options while crafting new items for woodworking and blacksmithing. I have gems for it, but didnt say what the problem is and all i get is a big ol' X lol. So i looked into research and nothing open up either. Can someone please explain how this work?
