you cant steal the scroll from a temple if your own faction does not have the same type of scroll

for example if you are AD, and your faction does not have the scroll of mnem at the temple of mnem, you would instantly die trying to pick up either the alma-ruma scroll (blue) or chim scroll (red) from the respective temples
    plays PC/NA

    active player since april 2014

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

Btw this also happened a long time ago, when you were anywhere beyond the scroll gates and the keeps to open the gate were taken back. So anytime the gates closed again and you still were in the area around the enemy temple, you just got holy beamed to death with 1 million damage too.

I used to get similar results when DK leaping up to a scroll gate guard when the gate is closed. Good memories.

The above answer in this post is incorrect.

The scroll barrier is the giant beam you see around the scroll when the scroll gate is closed.
If you are still within the scroll temple or anywhere behind the gate when it closes - When the scroll owning faction gains control of the keep/keeps nearby to close it, then you can remain there but getting too close to the scroll will hit you with the barrier for 1m. This is to prevent anyone just camping behind a gate until a big fight is done so they can sneak away with it.

You still need your corresponding scroll to pick up any scroll which is normal. So if you have your offensive scroll, you can pick up other offensive scrolls, and if you have your defensive scroll, you can pick up other defensive scrolls. You don’t just need both to pick up any.

    Examples :
    - If you only hold your own offensive at your temple but your defensive is captured elsewhere, or still being ran back, and you go to a temple with an open gate, and try to collect a defensive, then you’ll just get a message saying you need your scroll. (The game doesn’t explain about defensive vs offensive but that’s how it works)
    - If you hold both your scrolls and go storming an enemy scroll temple, and it’s a big long fight, and in the meantime they capture their mid home keep, or the closest keep to the gate, causing the gate to close.. Then the barrier will activate. Then if you get anywhere near the middle you’ll be one shot. There was actually a funny video of a guy on YT pulling people in with chains when this happened lol.it doesn’t happen very often as usually once a gate opens the scroll is taken before keeps are taken back.

Hope that helps! TLDR is don’t try to steal a scroll when the gate is closed and you see that giant beam :)

You've mistaken my comment about the "Scroll gate" for "Scroll temple". The scroll gate is the wall and gate that seals off the area around the scroll temple and home base from enemy forces until the two corresponding forts are taken. DKs used to be able to Dragon Leap up to a guard on the 2nd level of the scroll gate and thereby gain access to those protected lands behind the gate even when it was closed. However, several years ago ZOS added a mechanic where if you tried this you would be hit with tens of thousands of points of damage and instantly killed.

Yes, this situation is not identical to the 1 million damage from the scroll beam, but it's similar, so I'm not "incorrect".

I was referring to the the answer above that mentioned not taking the 1M damage when trying to take a scroll if you don’t have yours, since that is the only other answer I to the actual question here. I thought that clear but I hope it is now :)

Ah, now I see what you were referring to. Thanks for the clarification. This is why I use the "Quote" option when responding to comments, to try to avoid misunderstandings like this. :)
