Can other players open someone else's Chest from a Map?

I ask because yesterday I went to dig up a map and there were 2 other players a few steps away from the dirt mound on either side of me. The second the chest was revealed they both ran up to it. I quickly looted the chest and they both moved back.

I said "Were you seriously trying to take my chest?" and they both ran off.

So is it possible for a player to open another player's map chest or can it only be seen and opened by the player that unearthed it?

I've had players stand over me once the chest is dug, but even with my lag, I've been able to loot "before" they could. So I'm not sure if they really could have and I was just faster, or if they "thought" it was whoever opened it first, not who dug it up.....

I'm quite sure it's not. Maybe they were just unearthing their own chests?

They were standing a few steps away and ran up to the chest the second it was unearthed. If they were digging up their own maps they would have been standing closer to the dirt mound.

probably just trolling then. chests from maps are specific to the person that dug them up. they wouldn't have even been able to see them

I am not sure what the state of a treasure chest is if you do not completely empty it. They may have hoped for “left-overs” if they could interrupt you while you were taking the content. Had they brought any mobs with them?

Regular chests remain if they are not empty, so treasure map ones possibly share some of that logic.

It happened to me when I dug up a chest and didn't notice my inventory was full. When I pulled out my vendor and was selling stuff for space, someone ran up and looted my chest. I assumed it was a bug because I thought that wasn't supposed to happen.

treasure map chests to my understanding are instanced to the player, but they appear in the same location for every player due to the maps being a fixed location

ive been grouped with people who were getting a treasure chest before, i could not see the mound (did not have a map), but knew where it was due to addons, it does not show the other players animation for digging up the chest, or the chest itself, except when they are finished looting it you briefly see it despawn when its empty, but otherwise i saw no animations (no digging, no chest, no looting of the chest except when they fully looted it and the chest despawned)

Yup, same as for crafting surveys. A friend and I will often do these and treasure maps together if we have the same ones, so I have seen first-hand that the player unearthing the chest is just standing there for a moment (but on their screen, they are digging up and opening their chest). And when another player is picking their survey crafting nodes, they move to a spot, pause, move to the next spot, pause. For them, the pauses are their harvesting animations.

No the chests dug up are character specific.

That would useful to confirm specificity and reassure you. :)

Treasure maps are instanced to the player who holds them.
So while someone else who holds the same map could be standing at the same exact spot as you, neither of you will be able to see the other's chest. You won't even see them dig. From your perspective, they'll just be standing there.

I'm fairly certain the chest is only visible to you, the animation for digging up is not visible to you on the other player, and your animation is not visible to any other player. If you can see someone else digging up a treasure chest, or their treasure chest that is dug up, then report it as a bug. It's likely that person also had a treasure chest.

It's a system similar to surveys

No, they were opening their own chest, which only they can see, same as you can only see yours.

I have seen others when opening maps before, but usually no one else is around, and those that were didn't run up to my chest when I unearthed it like they did yesterday.

I know surveys are instanced. That isn't what I am asking about.

That's what I thought too which is why I thought my chest was safe. Maybe it's because I looted it with a full inventory. I have autoloot turned on so I actually saw the loot and loot window pop up but had to cancel looting to make room. When I was doing that, someone ran up and looted my waiting chest then it disappeared.

I know for sure I didn't loot it because I had full inventory and was in my vendor window, so unless those chests timeout in a few seconds then that guy looted my chest.

No, it's still there just for you. The only way another player can loot the "same" chest as you is if they just dug up their own copy of it from a map-- in which case you see yours, they see theirs, and the contents of each are limited to whoever dug it up.

You are the only person who can see the chest. When others come and seem to stand by you, waiting, they're actually seeing themselves digging up their own chest in the same spot.

      Nobody can loot your chest.

No, the chest from maps is specific to the player. Other people won't see the chest once it's dug up, nor will they see you crouch to loot it. From another person's perspective, you're just standing there doing nothing. I assume the chest eventually disappears if you leave stuff in it and leave the area, as it certainly goes away if you're unlucky enough for the game to crash after you dug it up but before you can empty it.

I have just tested this at no point could the second player see the mound, nor the chest!

I took items out one by one the other player saw nothing, no chest. :)

Edit :- On first chest I forgot to actually leave the chest and enter another window, I brought up my map as I didn't have a banker, other player still saw nothing.

Edit 2 :- Other player had banker so used that too, still nothing visible for second player. Someone else appeared at second map site they appeared to see nothing too. :)

Technically, you opened the chest but didn't loot it because of full inventory, so you closed it, did inventory, then opened it again. It may be that the chest is yours when you open it until you close it the first time and then it may become available to others since loot was left in it.

for normal treasure chests its about 10-15 min (dont know the exact time)

not entirely sure on the treasure map chests, but if you leave the area or say eso crashes after you dig up the chest, even if you relog immediately the chest will be gone (similar to a material survey, if you loot even 1 of the survey nodes and then crash, you lose all of the other nodes)

Nobody can see your specific treasure chest. Without the map, they can't dig for it and they can't interact with a chest they can't see.
