Will tabard nameplates remain if a guild drops below 10 members?

I've read online that if you buy a tabard while your guild has 10 members or more you'll be able to keep it even if the membership number drops below 10. But I was wondering if the effect of that tabard still remains (i.e., adding the guild name to your nameplate for others to see while you wear it), or if that functionality gets disabled, effectively rendering the tabard a purely cosmetic item for outfits etc.

✭The name and design should remain.
