How exactly does the Armory station work?

When I save a build, what do I need to do with the items in it in order to be able to load the build successfully? do I need to keep them in my inventory, or does the bank or even the storage furniture work? and when I load another build, are the other items put back where the were before I selected that build?

"In order for the Armory System to work correctly and equip the correct items to your saved build, those items must be in your character’s inventory - not in your bank or other storage. Items that are NOT in your inventory when you try to load a build will be skipped over and shown in RED on your character build."
