This disquisition is addressed to the newborns of the clan.
In Tamriel exist dozens of varieties of vampirism. Some of them are purer than others, and each and every one of them possess their own characteristics, supernatural powers, that set them apart from the others. Some of them are also more well-known than others, for many reasons. The variety known as the Sanguivoria Noxiphilic for instance is so widespread that it is logical for it to be known to all scholars of the subject. Others are deeply known only by specialists of the domain, like the Sanguinare vampiris and her purer variety, the one that runs in the Volkihar clan, as those two varieties can be found in Skyrim. Others are less-known, even though we know they’re existing, like the one we find in the black marsh or in valenwood.
Finally, there are some that are so absent from the surface of Tamriel that we can doubt their existence. But they are here, and the carriers of those varieties won’t get old and die underground. Maybe they are even more numerous than the varieties of the surface. The variety of vampirism that interests us today is the one I called the Sanguinis Chiroptic.
At first, we should study the ways of transmission of the Sanguinis Chiroptic in order to avoid any creation of an accidental progeny. It seems that, like for many known varieties, the main ingredient of the transformation in chiroptic vampire is the ingestion of the blood of the maker, that we’ll call Sire. This transformation can be facilitated if the mortal blood has been drunk almost entirely before. What will result from it is a vampire with a purer and more powerful blood as soon as he’s reborn, while a vampire that has not been emptied beforehand will gain its power progressively. The Sire’s blood must also be drunk in great quantity in order to infect the organism of the mortal, a few drops won’t do. These conditions guarantee that the creation of a new vampire is intentional and not accidental. A scratch or a simple bite does not have the wanted effect, as the chiroptic vampire does not suffer from micro-bleeding to the nails or the teeths.
After that, the infected mortal is plunged into a deep sleep of precisely three days, during which he is visited by nightmares, and oniric visions of places that don’t exist. When he wakes up, he is a newborn chiroptic vampire.
The chiroptic vampires are characterized by a sickly pale complexion. Protruding sharp fangs on the upper part of their jaws are visible when they open their mouths, and their eyes are blood red, glowing in the dark under all circumstances. Their ears are also a little more pointy than normal, though the difference is not noticeable in elven (or animal) races. They do not burn in the sun, and cannot be destroyed by it, but its heat is almost unbearable to them, and its light robs them of their energy and their powers, preventing them from making great efforts and defending themselves. This makes them nocturnal in nature, unlike the sanguivoria noxiphilic whose infected can predate in daylight, but I digress.
Going back to the subject of sanguinis chiroptic, the name of this strain of vampirism comes from the powers it provides. This is because vampires of this strain share a bond with surrounding bats, allowing them to direct and guide them at will. They can call upon them to surround and protect them, or attack their enemies, or even see through their eyes. It has been noted that those infected by this strain of vampirism can also perceive their surroundings without seeing, only with the help of surrounding sounds, making them suitable for hunting in total darkness. They can also change into a swarm of bats themselves to move around, flying. Finally, like any vampire, they feed on blood, but not only. This allows them to replenish their stamina and energy, and regenerate their wounds faster, making them dangerous to face. Finally they share some of the most common gifts among the vampires, including : supernatural speed and strength, and a gift for magic overall, although they aren’t as good at any particular school of magic, unlike other strains of vampirism.
It should be noted that chiroptic vampires are sensitive to fire and silver, just like any vampire. A chiroptic vampire touched by a silver blade would feel a burn as if touched by the magnus itself, although it has been observed to be able to hold a silver blade, with the right protections. Sensitivity to fire is reflected in its burning rate, which is faster than dry wood when fully aflame. Because of this weakness, those infected with this strain avoid flames as much as possible, and the simplest of torches becomes effective protection against them.
Chiroptic vampires are not undead per se, but rather non-living. They breathe, but their heartbeat is extremely slow and weak, allowing them to go without breathing for several minutes and making drowning difficult. However, while most bodily function are still active, albeit at a slower pace, their stomachs can no longer accommodate mortal food as before. The ingestion of food such as meat, bread, or vegetables is systematically rejected by the body, forcing the individual to feed on blood.
When a chiroptic vampire is slain, it spontaneously burns to ash, which can be harvested to create various potions.
Finally it is worth mentioning one last thing : the oldest vampires and those whose blood is the purest have access to a monstrous vampiric form. When they transform, they become a creature whose size can vary from two to three meters, with developed muscles and possessing a face similar to that of the bat. In this form, their mouth is provided with several sharp teeth, their whole face is pulled back and their ears are more pointed and stretched. They also have two bat wings on their backs, allowing them to fly and glide through the air at will. And finally their hands are equipped with sharp claws like steel. In this forme, they are formidable in close combat.
That’s about all that can be said about the strain of vampirism called Sanguinis chiroptic. It is a strain that is very rare in Tamriel because it originates from the depths of Blaclreach, in skyrim, which explains why it shares certain characteristics with the Volkihar strain. Now, my children, go, go feed yourselves and drink the blood of mortals. The fort’s cattle won’t come on its own !
