Under 50 bgs and monster helms

Just asking a question. I've been leveling through under 50 bgs. About to level out. But there is one player that is using the Monster helm Nunatak. And I thought monster sets were for over level 50. Can you use monster sets in under 50 bgs?

You cannot. There are 2 possible explanations for this.

    1) It wasn't Nunatak, but rather Winterborn farmed from normal Maelstrom. They have similar visuals and effects.

    2) The BG bugged out (happens every now and then) and placed someone above level 50 into the under 50 lobby. This has happened to me before on a max level toon a number of times and is just one of the many bugs with the BG queue system.

Edit: I suppose it may be possible that the IC helms drop at character level, but I was under the assumption that at the very least the shoulders from the IC merchant were always max level.

Nunatak is an imperial city set : the head drops at the level of the character killing the district boss and the shoulders bought from boxes from alliance base in imperial city.

In previous undaunted events it was posssible to have characters have sub-50th level shoulders for any monster set as the event dropped keys which characters of any level could use.

So, yes, imperial city sets only for full monster set but shoulders only possible for any non-imperial city dungeon for under 50th level.

I suspect both @tincanman and @CameraBeardThePirate are both right and wrong.

You can get the shoulders ( I checked, this works, see image below) from the tel-var merchant at any level for 20k or 30k tel-var stones - I'm not sure the exact price - or 3k for a random box.

At c160 you can kill the district boss or use 60 keys to get a helm from one of the imperial city vaults; the keys don't give a helm if you're less than 50th level from the vault. I'm not sure about the district boss drops, though - that would seem the only possible way but I doubt the boss loot table would include a monster helm for a character less than 50th level but I am not sure about this at all.

I didn't check the potential for monster helm drops from district bosses - my dps isn't great and imperial city is a playground for gankers who'd chew up any under 50th level character I sent there to try. Perhaps one of those ganking stalwarts can clarify if under 50th level characters can get a helm from a district boss?

Assuming @maxjapank got the Nunatak information from a death recap and monster helms don't drop for under 50th level characters, I'd be inclined to go with @CameraBeardThePirate suggestion that BG's simply glitched and dumped you into a battleground with c160+ players.

I can confirm the under 50th level availability of dungeon monster set shoulders referred to by @tincanman using undaunted event keys. I didn't have the Nunatak shoulders in my sticker book so tested the under 50th level tel-var box and can confirm their existence, too, image below:

Long ago blue quality monster helms had a chance to drop on normal. I do not know if it would drop at a level below the vet levels.

I am 100% sure the player was wearing Nunatak. I have a screenshot saved of combat metrics when I was checking for received damage. And of course, I have the players name. The main reason I checked was said player was a higher level when I first started leveling through under 50 bgs. But last night, they were a lower level, using the exact same name. So I’m guessing that said player is a twink that re-rolls over and over to destroy in under 50 bgs.

Anyways, there is not much I can do about someone consistently twinking in under 50 bgs. But I was just surprised that Nunatak is allowed. I’ll send my screenshot to the devs anyway. Im lvl 44 now and will soon lvl out anyway.

I don't PvE much so I have no idea what has changed or what has stayed the same... But I spent a lot of time in Icereach back when it had some different names. Goldwater... Or Black Water Blade or whatever it was called...

Back then your character got a letter inviting them to join the Undaunted at level 40 or 45 and you could indeed go get a monster helmet, get keys, and get shoulders. My memory of this is VERY foggy, hopefully someone can come corroborate my story, but I'm like 91% sure I had a set of Valkyn Skoria I used on my low level toons.

But so what I'm getting at is this: Even if things have changed now... If someone still had theirs from before, couldn't they still use it?

The re-rolled player was level 24 last night. When I saw the name, I knew that they were one that I would have a tougher time fighting. But when I saw they were lvl 24, I was surprised because before they were a much higher level and should have level'd out or been closer to level 50 like myself.

Okay well I wasn't even 100% sure my story was straight so I certainly have no idea how that person got a monster set at level 24.

Realize this about re-rollers though, they don't always play a new toon every time. Perfectly normal for them to re-roll the exact same toon over and over, passing gear down as they go. And if you (like me,) have your settings showing you gamertags instead of toon names then of course that's another part of it.

Random thought-- can you use transmute crystals to craft monster sets in your sticker book? This is perhaps an explanation?

You can't create sub-50th level monster sets using the transmute system. The lowest monster sets that can be made is cp10.

The imperial city monster sets were introduced in U30, I think about a year and a half ago.

The shoulders from any dungeon monster set would be available to anyone who used undaunted event keys with a sub-50th level character to get them. But not the helms.

Probably from the same guilds that ran roughshod across lowbie cyrodiil.

You can have a complete monster set from the IC at any level - I've gotten Zoal helms on under 50 toons from killing the patrolling horror in Elven Gardens. It is leveled to the character that obtained it. You can use your telvar to get the shoulder from the vendor in the sewers - and the shoulder is leveled to the toon that obtains it. I have used the full set in under 50s BGs while leveling a toon. It is especially useful against NBs.

So it is entirely feasible for an under 50 player to have a near meta build in under 50 BGs.

It is like taking a gun to a knife fight, but there is nothing stopping people from doing it.

Thank you for you confirmation. Good to know. I'll not make an issue of it. But it would be nice if the Devs would discuss it, and whether they think it's something they want happening in under 50 bgs and pvp.

I have advocated in the past for the sets usable within under 50s BGs to be the same as the ones that work in the no CP Cyro campaign (Ravenwatch). The removal of powerful proc sets would make the under 50s BGs into a training ground for new PvPers, while still allowing more experienced players some sets that can do damage or mitigate damage, for when they want to level alt toons. If they can do it for Ravenwatch, they can do it for under 50s BGs.

Just tried this with a level 23 character and can't see the Undaunted vendors to buy the chest. So it looks like you'd have to be at least lvl 45 to buy a shoulder item. Sub-50, yes, but not by much.
