The First Time You Risked Your Life
In a fantasy world, there are occupations which put your character in danger all the time. Adventurers, smugglers, mercenaries, assassins, thieves, and warriors put their lives on the line every day, but that behavior had to start somewhere. What started it all for your character? This exercise will help you outline that milestone in your character’s life.
It Happened …
… when I was a child.
… when I was still learning to swim.
… when I first left home.
… before I mastered my craft.
… before I was called an “adult.”
… during a time of great upheaval.
… during a time of great peace.
… when the constellation of the Serpent rose high in the sky.
… on the __th day of the __th month of my __th year.
I Did It To …
… impress someone.
… get something of great value.
… prove I was able to do something.
… prove I wasn’t afraid.
… test my abilities.
… save someone special to me.
… save a stranger.
… save my pet.
… get out of a very bad situation.
I Could Have Been Worse, But I Did …
… get a big scar.
… lose a prized possession.
… break a few bones.
… banished from the town/clan/organization.
… lose a finger.
… lose my magicka.
… lose a limb.
… lose my clothes.
… get away unscathed.
I Look Back and Think …
… how stupid I was.
… how lucky I was.
… if only I was stronger.
… I did everything I could.
… if only my father was there.
… I should have tried it sooner.
… if only _____ was there.
… about all that happened because of it.
… someday I will repay _____ for it.
Now that you have these basic elements, put together the details. Who was involved? Where did it happen? Did it change your life in more ways than one? Who else was affected by your actions? What would be the purpose of telling a new adventurer this story? Warn them? Make them laugh? Discourage them from foolishness or stir the fire of adventure in them?
