Please explain what "guaranteed" means for the new reward boxes

"This new reward box has a chance to contain some of the following items:

Guaranteed chance for random crafting materials
Guaranteed chance for a High Isle treasure
..."

Now what does this even mean? If if has a chance to contain SOME of the following, how it can be guaranteed. What is this "guaranteed" mean at the start of each reward description.

"The Ascendant Hoard Box includes a host of reward containers within containers..."

So there is one hoard box per player that contains multiple reward containers. Is the "within containers" part talking about the hoard box or containers inside the box that might have other containers inside them? Do they contain all of the following or do they have a separate chance to contain each of the following?

You become really unintentionally ambiguous while explaining these rewards every event. I am tired of seeing these descriptions please put more effort into your news articles.
And if there is a ninja cooldown on some of item drops please let people know beforehand.

I mean, you selectively quoted the rewards list to remove the stuff that only has a chance to show up:

"Chance for one of the following:

    High Isle furnishings
    High Isle furnishing recipe
High Isle Treasure Map or Survey Report
    High Isle motif page

Small chance for a tradeable page of the new Oaken Order armor style ""

Those two drop types are not guaranteed. While the rest are.

As to the Ascendant Horde box, it literally is a Russian nesting doll of containers with different rewards in each. They've done this already for the Elswyr event.

I see now, everything except the bottom two items seems to be guaranteed. I did not intentionaly do it, i just quoted top two. Still i dont think it will contain all of top five items seperately, maybe it contains at least one of the top five. No way to be sure with this chaotic wording. They could just say "it contains at least one of these five" if that is the case which still may not be it.

guaranteed and chance are antonyms, these words should not be used together.

"You are guaranteed to get one of the following per box" would be a better way to phrase it.

    this is the full quote
During the event period, the first time you complete a daily quest in High Isle (or the Dreadsail Reef trial weekly quest instead) you receive a Society of the Steadfast's Largesse Coffer. This new reward box may contain some of the following items:

Guaranteed chance for random crafting materials
Guaranteed chance for a High Isle treasure
Guaranteed chance for a style item for High Isle motifs
Guaranteed chance for a High Isle overland set item
    Guaranteed chance for companion gear
Ember or Isobel must be your active companion
Chance for one of the following:
    High Isle furnishings
    High Isle furnishing recipe
High Isle Treasure Map or Survey Report
    High Isle motif page
Small chance for a tradeable page of the new Oaken Order armor style
Your interpretation, as I read it, is:

During the event period, the first time you complete a daily quest in High Isle (or the Dreadsail Reef trial weekly quest instead) you receive a Society of the Steadfast's Largesse Coffer. This new reward box will contain the following items:
    A random crafting materials
    A High Isle treasure
A style item for High Isle motifs

    In addition, it may contain:
    one of the following:
    High Isle furnishings
    High Isle furnishing recipe
High Isle Treasure Map or Survey Report
    High Isle motif page
as well as a small chance for a tradeable page of the new Oaken Order armor style

This seems a reasonable interpretation, though I wonder if it's correct and why it's written the way they wrote rather than the way I wrote it.

Hi All. So a few things to clear up here.

I am not responsible for writing these. We have a dedicated and talented team built for writing our copy. The community team weighs in at times to help, but writing the copy is not my responsibility.

If there is confusion in the copy, please just let us know and we can ask for clarification. No need to point fingers on who wrote what or compare ppl to being drunk. While we understand it's a figure of speech, it's still not great for our team members to read. Ultimately, we want to get accurate and clear information out to everyone.

Now, to address the concern around the usage of "guaranteed chance", we're checking in with the team now to get a better clarification for you. Hang tight. Since it's close to the end of the day here, we may not get feedback until tomorrow. We just want to make sure you get the right info. So we have to make a few checks first. Thanks!

We noted this in another thread asking about the clickables term. That's an internal term that slipped in the copy. Makes sense for us, but not for players. We have changed that as @virtus753 noted. It happens sometimes, especially when there are a ton of moving pieces on our end that players do not see. But when tagged, we're happy to adjust and correct.

I'll also get clarification on the The Ascendant Hoard Box question. Again, to make sure everything is accurate when I come back with answers.

Just got word back on the "guaranteed chance" wording. So to clarify in the Society of the Steadfast's Largesse Coffer, the meaning is that you are guaranteed a chance of getting one of the following in the coffer:
    • Guaranteed chance for random crafting materials
    • Guaranteed chance for a High Isle treasure
    • Guaranteed chance for a style item for High Isle motifs
    • Guaranteed chance for a High Isle overland set item
    • Guaranteed chance for companion gear

So you will 100% get one of those potential items labeled with "Guaranteed chance" in that list in the Society of the Steadfast's Largesse Coffer. That's in addition to:

-Chance for one of the following:
    • High Isle furnishings
    • High Isle furnishing recipe
    • High Isle Treasure Map or Survey Report
    • High Isle motif page
-Small chance for a tradeable page of the new Oaken Order armor style

We will also update the article accordingly. Hopefully that helps clear things up. I'll confirm the The Ascendant Hoard Box question tomorrow.

Guaranteed to get one of crafting mat OR High Isle treasure OR Motif OR Set item OR companion gear?

    OR

Guaranteed to get at least one from each of those categories?

    These are very different "guarantees"
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

You can have a chance of 1.0, though, which is a guarantee. You can also eat jumbo shrimp, because - despite being an oxymoron - they do exist. I agree with the overall point that “guaranteed chance” is one of the more convoluted and confusing ways of putting something, and should therefore be changed for clarity in expositional writing, but being an oxymoron does not per se mean it is meaningless.

Poor example, shrimp has developed double meanings. Bittersweet would have been better but would have missed the mark even still as that is a sense.

Guaranteed means no potential for failure- success is involved
Chance means something has the potential for failure - risk is involved.

    They wouldn't advertise Successful Risk

These words are carefully chosen buzzwords that attract certain attention and can confuse consumers as has been seen in this topic.

I've seen guaranteed chance used before to denote that you have a 100% chance to get something. Only other time I can recall it is was when in something similar to a lootbox. 100% to get something in the box, and lowered odds for everything else. I've also seen "100% chance" too. Yeah, it's an oxymoron but I don't think it's meaningless.

If it had been written like

100% chance at one of the following: X, Y, or Z
50% chance at one of the following: a, b, or c
And 10% chance for super special awesome bonus prize.

    I think people would understand.

    1. "You have a guaranteed chance to receive one of the following"

    2. "You are guaranteed to receive one of the following"

    3. "You will receive one of the following"

One of these is not like the others and does not mean the same as the others. If you have a guaranteed chance, you don't have anything more than a chance. You just sure as hell have a chance. Based on what Kevin said above, I believe they mean 2 or 3.

    Probably. LOL.
