Five Lessons Learned

When growing up, people have situations in their early life that affect them so deeply, the effects are felt throughout their life. These life lessons shape their personality and influence their decision making. Take a look at these five prompts and answer them to discover what your character learned from their experience.

1. Growing up you experienced something that you never wish to revisit and would do anything to avoid it. It could be the desperation of extreme poverty, homelessness, the isolation of social rejection, or the regret of a poor choice.

What is this thing that should be avoided at all costs? What measures do you take these days to avoid this?

2. Before you truly understood your abilities, you unintentionally cause harm with them to someone or something.

What did you break or whom did you injure? Did you have to make restitution or receive a punishment? What did this situation teach you about managing your abilities?

3. As an adolescent you stood up against something stronger than you to fight against a perceived injustice.

What did you lose as a result of the experience? How did this event shape your response to injustice or wrongdoing as an adult?

4. When you were a child, someone close to you hid a truth from you. As an adult you found out about this deception.

Did the truth hurt you? How did the discovery of the lie shape your view of people? How do you approach secrets and deception as an adult?

5. At some point in your younger years, you risked your life for something and were rewarded for it.

How close did you come to death? What was the nature of your reward? What do you take into consideration when risking your life these days?

What your character learned from their life experiences "off camera" will help during times when considering how your character would react in certain situations now.
