To Change My Billing Method, I Have to Cancel My Account and Make a New One?

this seems completely unwieldy. what happens to my 8+ years of billing history, etc?

If I recall correctly, you cancel your subscription and make a new one. You don't cancel the account. Your billing history is unaffected.
