Crafting gear worth the effort?

So far, i have a 30 Templaer, a 20+ Warden and a lowbie Necromancer and i've not yet been able to craft any gear that's even close to the loot drops i've been getting. I spend literal hours running around gathering mats to level the crafting professions and i'm wondering if there's really a point to it. Should i just not worry about crafting and just rely on gear drops?

You will eventually want to transmute, upgrade and reconstruct items as you progress in the game.

Although you won't necessarily need to craft armour for yourself, levelling your crafting skills are pretty necessary for doing those things!

I wouldn't knock yourself out too much to do it though, it'll level as you level so long as you don't ignore it completely ;)

I had the same experience with my first character, once I had enough leather to craft something the XP I got from farming it bumped me up to the next rank of materials!

It works better once your character gets the crafting lines maxed out and passives enabled. If you do daily crafting writs, you can get surveys that point you to locations with concentrated mat nodes that make it easier too.

I do craft whole sets for my new characters when I’m leveling them up now, and I also can reconstruct drop gear sets if I need them, which I just did for one character recently.

So it’s a long term investment really.

Yeah, found gear is really better. I run dungeons as soon as I can to provide me with XP and gear, it helps a lot.

My bank is full of various set pieces for alts to level up into. As much as i like having gear just fall into my outstretched hands, i'd rather make it and have a player based crafting economy (if there is such a thing, i've not seen any sign of it).

    What's the "reconstructed" you mentioned?

Using the transmute station to craft gear from your Set Items Collection, or "sticker book."
That process is referred to as "reconstruction."

Yeah, you can actually craft sets that were originally drop sets if they are in your sticker book. The more of the pieces of the set you know, the fewer transmute gems are needed to reconstruct a single piece. This is something I never expected they would give us, but it is now possible.

There are some crafted sets that are BIS or at least, pre-trial BIS, that you will want to craft when you're CP160+

You'll also want to level up the gear crafting skill lines so you can improve any gear, including drops using fewer mats.

You'll want to research all the traits because crafting some of the better gear requires you to have all traits learned and also for reconstructing gear from your sets collection with the traits you want to use.

So yeah, you definitely do want to level-up your crafting.

      __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

      - Some crafted gear can be BiS for some builds.
      - Transmuting requires you to know the traits, so you need to research them so your gameplay later will be easier.
      - Upgrading gear is cheaper if your crafting level is higher. Gold mats are expensive, so it's worth leveling 'em up.
      - Daily writs will make you a lot of money. The more toons you can do them on, the better.
      - Jewelry in particular is a good money maker. Some crafted sets in rings and necklaces sell for 100-300k for blue jewelry; you'll only spend 60k to make it. It takes time to sell them, but they do sell.
      - Do daily writs on every character, even if they're not leveled! You can get surveys (a scroll that leads you to an area with a ton of crafting materials) regardless of your level, and can then put them in the bank to do them later when you have a toon that is max level in that particular craft.

Deconstruction is the best way to level up your crafting. This goes for EVERY crafting skill line except cooking and alchemy. Do not waste your time making gear to level up your other skill lines, it's best to just collect gear and deconstruct it when your inventory is full, and repeat until everything is leveled, then move gear you get to your bank to decon on toons. The more crafters you have the better. Also, make sure you always have all your trait research slots filled on a single character. You only need one character to do traits.
Alchemy is good to level, as it's much cheaper to make your own potions than it is to buy them. A stack of weapon power pots only costs 20k to make, but sells for 40k. Same with glyphs; gold glyphs sell for between 6 and 12k each, with the most expensive (there's 2 i think) that cost over 60k. It'll only cost you 2-3k to make glyphs (if not for free if you gather your own mats), other than the 60k glyphs which have a specific material to make that you get in imperial city sewers and imperial city proper (the pvp areas). Cooking is also worth it since it's very cheap to make your own food.

ESO uses a guild vendor system. A guild of 50 or more people can bid on stalls to sell their wares at around the major cities. As a member of those guilds you can have up to 30 items for sale on the trader. You can be in up to 5 guilds, so 150 slots at a time.

Use the in-game guild finder and search for "trading guilds"

If you're farming mats to craft things to level crafting; don't. You level a lot faster by deconning items, the highest level items you can find. Give all the drops to your main crafter to decon. Having a friend or guildmate who has cp160 characters give you the loot drops they don't need to decon helps leveling a lot. Get certified to do writs; you get intricate items as rewards that boost experience when you decon them. Look in guild traders; players sell intricate items for people leveling crafters.

Find a good player guild; even social guilds can and do get traders, no dues or required sales needed. Friendly guilds do exist; people who don't mind questions and have crafters who like to help out anyone making a crafter. It makes trait research a lot easier and more organized if you can ask someone to make the items you want to research in the traits you want when you're ready for them.

Pick flowers and mushrooms; don't ignore "trash" like worms either. I see people in zone chat moaning they are flat broke, then see those players run past cornflower and columbine. They just ran past 600-800 gold for each flower. One person went on a rant once when I mentioned worms were going for 45-55 gold each at that point. Having access to a guild trader makes getting gold not so hard.

There is huge worth in crafting. It taps into various aspects of the game. To answer your sets question specifically.

I personally run nothing but crafted sets on my characters. With the odd exception here and there to build specific themes. The crafted sets in game are oftentimes overlooked and considered subpar. My experience is the opposite. I can run the hardest content, win in PvP fights, and most of all, enjoy myself, with what we have available in the crafted sets. Further to this. Crafting in the style for the theme or character I am running it quite satisfying.

I think advancing your crafting is an essential aspect of the game. It takes time and investment. The pay off is worth it though.

Unfortunately crafted gear is more or less a stopgap measure these days. Great for slapping together sets on characters youre leveling, but more often than not mediocre and dated when it comes to endgame meta. Nowadays between the outfit system and the stickerbook crafting is relegated to little more than daily/master writs and furniture crafting.

I like to wear crafted training gear as I level alts, but I am at 18 max on PC NA and about 4 max on PC EU, with others leveling near there (8 or 9 total). I only recently realized I could reuse leveling gear, so I was always making new stuff along the way. Wasteful, but making purple stuff is not hard if you run a number of dailies and decon most drops. I usually have a blue neck and use whatever rings drop along the way.

This gives me set bonuses and the Training xp boost.

Your mileage may vary as they say.

Crafting gear is worth it depending on your build. I use Deadlands Demolisher for my bash Necromancer, so yes, it is nice. However, crafting gear comes at the cost of how many traits you know. At your current level, I would elect 1 character to be your master crafter and research everything. Deconstruct everything. Unlock the passives to allow more research. An example is Deadlands. It is a 7-set trait requirement so you can not craft each piece of armor from this set if you don't meet the requirement of knowing 7 traits for legs/chest/arms etc. It is also worth being a master crafter because of the potential to score dreugh wax or chrome plats to gold jewelry.

Not to mention, it is a consistent way to gain 5k gold once you hit CP 160. 3 characters=15,000
      I just want man flesh.

I would disagree with this statement. Sets like Clever Alchemist and Shacklebreaker are widely used in end game content.

My crafter toon always crafts gear for my pre-50 characters. I don't upgrade it past blue and I do pass it down to lower level characters like every 10 levels or so, and I like to sometimes experiment and craft little-used sets like Orgnum's or Sload's and mess around in battlegrounds. My characters outgrow the gear eventually anyway so why not?

Actually come to think of it even my main only uses crafted and sometimes overland gear (Spriggan's). No dungeon sets, no trial sets, just crafted and what I can find fairly easily. It's because I'm a filthy casual lol.

So yes crafted can be worth the effort.

At last, someone else who plays around with mix and match sets under cp160. Cold Harbor's Favorite/Morkuldin's, Morkuldin's/Hunding's, any sets that catch my "Gee, wonder what this would do"

Oh yeah, totally! I'm always playing around with different craftable/reconstructed sets for under 50 pvp. Always keep trying to make this set work in pvp, and it just doesn't... though I love the idea of it... *sigh* From what I've found, it really has only one good use, is putting detect poison on NBs... They can't stealth for like 8 seconds, which is pretty amazing. Other than that, there are a bunch of sets that outperform this one, but I keep trying!

I'd say pick one of those characters to be a dedicated crafter. Have that character learn ALL traits and before you know it, you'll be able to craft most of the bis sets in no time.

Try to do daily craft writs on all three of your characters though. Place the intrinsic trait items into your bank and have your "main crafter" be the one to decon them. This will level up your crafting skill lines.

I have one character using this set with a bunch of poisons I crafted https://eso-sets.com/set/legacy-of-karth and I even want to experiment with the poisons.

It's not a set I would consider using at CP 160 so I'll use it while leveling.

Ha! I paired Assassins and Karth, too! I mean, kinda makes sense. I ran double poison on my front bar and stealth/magic/stam draining on my back bar. Unfortunately, 20% proc time is just not going to outperform for pvp (or just keep even with).

Only problem is it's a dungeon set and will be very difficult to farm for the correct sub-50 levels I'd need. Maybe transmuting it if I want to waste transmutes lol.
