The card game was too hard for me. I feel like an absolute.

I didn't mind playing card games inside eso at all. I've never played CCG before and didn't want to play CCG, but I was enthusiastic about ToT, because I don't have enough activity in this game and I thought it would be great to launch the game not only for crafting dailies. Until today... It was a very humiliating experience for me. I can't understand anything at all. There are too many rules. There are too many cards. Too many different effects. The tutorial is written as if for people who are already familiar with CCG, and not for those people who see it for the first time in their lives. It is very difficult for me to unite all this chaos into a clear picture of the rules. I don’t even understand what is the rule and what are the tricks. God... It's terrible.

Upd: Ok. I got excited. I still hope to understand this card game. But these are definitely the emotions that I experienced when I first met ToT

It's just like any game, you're not going to remember everything all at once when you're first learning it. If possible, ask friends or guildmates who understand to play a game or two with you and explain things for you. It is kind of confusing at first, and kind of overwhelming, but if you want to learn the best way is to just play several rounds against the NPCs in the game building.
    Character List [RP and PvE]:
Stands-Against-Death: Argonian Magplar Healer - Crafter
Krisiel: Redguard Stamsorc DPS - Literally crazy Werewolf, no like legit insane. She nuts
Kiju Veran: Khajiit Stamblade DPS - Ex-Fighters Guild Suthay who likes to punch things, nicknamed Tinykat
Niralae Elsinal: Altmer Stamsorc DPS - Young Altmer with way too much Magicka
Sarah Lacroix: Breton Magsorc DPS - Fledgling Vampire who drinks too much water
Slondor: Nord Tankblade - TESified verson of Slenderman
Marius Vastino: Imperial <insert role here> - Sarah's apathetic sire who likes to monologue
Delthor Rellenar: Dunmer Magknight DPS - Sarah's ex who's a certified psychopath
Lirawyn Calatare: Altmer Magplar Healer - Traveling performer and bard who's 101% vanilla bean
Gondryn Beldeau: Breton Tankplar - Sarah's Mages Guild mentor and certified badass old person
Gwendolyn Jenelle: Breton Magplar Healer - Friendly healer with a coffee addiction
Soliril Larethian- Altmer Magblade DPS - Blind alchemist who uses animals to see and brews plagues in his spare time
Tevril Rallenar: Dunmer Stamcro DPS - Delthor's "special" younger brother who raises small animals as friends
Celeroth Calatare: Bosmer <insert role here> - Shapeshifting Bosmer with enough sass to fill Valenwood

The tutorial is terrible, and the first few matches are about figuring out what is actually happening.... but after a dozen or so matches, it becomes a lot of fun actually.

At first I felt the same as you OP, I believe my reply about this is still in the ToT forum category somewhere, but don't give up too easily. Do the triple town daily for a few days, and it all becomes easier and easier to understand. Matches will go faster too.

go upstairs in the club adn play with an NPC there - there is no time limit to it, you can learn it there - well partly, these NPC are very generous, the patron they are using is Hlaalu and just in case of emergency. Otherwise they hold back quite a lot, like a few times take the 2nd or 3rd best card in the tavern - but if it stays there for a few turns, they will take it.

So this is a pretty safe environment to learn the basics of that game, get familiar with it, learn one or the other strategy which might work - but keep in mind, this is a crippled NPC player, the other difficulty levels do not hold back that much or at all.

I found the game a bit confusing at first, and there have been times when I've clicked on a card expecting a different outcome, only to have something else happen that I wasn't expecting-- such as clicking on one of my opponent's agent cards because it was highlighted, causing me to spend power points on attacking that card-- but each time I've made a mistake I've learned a bit more about how the game works.

Frankly, I wasn't much taken with the game when I briefly tried it out on the PTS, and I waited for several days after High Isle's release before accepting the ToT quest and heading to Gonfalon Bay to learn the game, but I've actually found the game to be a lot more engaging than I'd expected. Last night while doing the daily quest to play against NPCs, I had one match where the NPC and I kept fighting each other valiantly for the win. The final score was 60 to 59, in my favor, and it was genuinely fun and exciting for me.

I've yet to try my hand against a human opponent, but the NPCs are certainly interesting and challenging to compete against.

You know,, the thing with it is, that if you stick with it, you will think after just a short while "how could I ever consider this to be difficult to understand" - but it is with all things like that, which are uncommon to us - first time driving a car for example and the idea "I will never get good at this", and now you don't even think about how you drive, you are just doing it.

And Tales of Tribute is quite similar - overwhelming at start due to all the unknown card decks, but after a while you will start to feel comfortable, but still play quite slowly (what is good to learn it) - but it will get easier and faster - I tend to play around 10-15 minutes now, very rarely 20 minutes or more (if we still have to compete in the 40-80 range).

So stick with it, just don't give up - you will get the hang of it.

As far as the tutorial goes, I think it does a decent bare-bones job of introducing you to the game. The real learning occurs while you're actually playing the game-- and as with any learning process, it doesn't happen all at once, but takes time.

You take an action and see what the results are. Then you learn something by whether or not the results were what you had intended to achieve with your action. You do something right and get positive (or desired) results. You do something wrong and get negative (or undesired) results. You identify what your mistakes were and learn from them.

It's true that there are things which the tutorial either doesn't explain at all, or doesn't explain in depth, and perhaps it would be nice to have a more detailed tutorial that explains these things. But on the other hand, I rather enjoy those "Aha!" moments of discovery when I suddenly realize something on my own, even if it's something simple and basic that someone else might have intuited from the very start.

I haven't played ToT yet since I'm on console. But during the introduction Twitch streams, it did seem like they were expecting the player base to have some basic knowledge of how CCG's work in general. Which is a really strange assumption to make for a world-wide game in 2022.

Just keep playing matches against NPCs and take your time to read the cards and watch the effects the cards have when an NPC plays their turn. I don't normally play card games and I caught on after playing NPCs over and over.
I'm super hyped to collect the the last two decks and the rest of the upgrades I need as I'm addicted now.

I can agree that the tutorial is wildly insufficient. It’s enough to explain the process of taking a turn, and what you need to win. And that’s it? Really? They don’t bother to tell you all the different card types and effects, and it’s so confusing trying to figure it all out during the game. I’m not asking for strats or hand holding after that first tutorial, but it seems like the most basic of necessities to actually tell us what the cards do.

All the cards describe exactly what they do when you mouse over them. Play vs AI with unlimited turn times so you can read everything. After a couple of games you will have seen every card in the first 4 decks (excluding the upgrades which are generally similar to existing cards just better).

I would add that playing with NPCs you can as well experiment as much as you like - loosing is not a big thing, if something isn't working like you thought it would - you just get 1/3 of the ranking points less, if you loose, but you will still make progress. So don't be afraid to test things out and see how well or badly they perform - that you have unlimited time to think against an AI is supporting to play around with different options and learn to play with different decks.

I am starting to get it a bit more. That doesn't make it fun.

I keep playing it coz the rewards *can* be good (sometimes my lose rewrds beat my win ones) That doesn't make it fun.

I hate it. I hate it so much.

I am never gonna like it.

    It's not fun.

This card game showed me how much dumber than I've thought I am. (Thanks ZOS for keeping me humble, I guess.)

Had no idea what's up after tutorial (which itself is terrible and voiced by character with funny accent for extra difficulty). Played first game, lost, no idea what's up. Played another game, won, still no idea what's up.

To add insult to injury, rewards were just some low-grade drinks and mats I've could have gathered in fraction of time. Or could run two dungeons in time each game took (rather wasted).

Card game is getting hard pass from now on. Grinding fishing achievements looks more fun than this.

I like brahgas's accent a lot, and if you think it is hard to understand, you haven't experienced how people of african nations pronounce english words and sentences - they often pause in the middle of a word to continue much later, whilst not repeating the whole word, but continuing with just the remaining rest of the word like

"We will all parti" ---- yeah, we will all party, good to hear --- "-cipate in these games."
"With damage in the mill" --- oh, there is a mill, didn't know that -- "-ion dollars range."

If you think Brahgas's accent is terrible, you haven't heard really terrible ones yet. Not saying that african accents would be terrible, they are not, they are just different.

Didn't like the tutorial, and enjoyed the novice match even less. 46 turns took 45 minutes of game time, only to lose and still gain no understanding of how I was winning at one point, then stalemate for 35 rounds, then a loss at the final. Actually, I was relieved it was over more than anything.
Have no intention of pursuing this card game. Would much rather lag out in cyrodiil.

The terrible part is aimed at the tutorial itself. It would be horrible no matter who reads the lines. Accent was just very distracting. Nothing against accents. Accents are awesome and add life to the characters and depth to the world. But getting instructions about something totally foreign, which I have to remember and follow later is the one time I would absolutelly prefer perfect "vanilla" English.

English is my second language (got atrocious accent myself, lol) and mostly used to listening to US English. Even British or Australian need extra work to catch every precise word. In conversation it is easy to miss one word and still get all needed from context. In that tutorial couldn't quite make out one word and all meaning got lost, since everything was rapid fire of new info.

Come to think of it, it is usually easier for me to speak english with another non-native English speaker. They speak slower and we tend to have the same vocabulary since we likely learnd from similar textbooks.

@KaGaOri just a quick comment, because it is a little off-topic.

You won't learn languages well from text books, you have to listen to native speakers and interact with them in their language. Most will not speak RP english, but in their local tongue, which might have words you don't know or which are used in a different way or have abbreviations which you never heard before. But this is what the language is really like and what you should adapt to. It can be quite different than in text books, plus people tend to not speak word by word, but they use connected speech - listen to Brahgas, he is using connected speech, and that is why you might have problems to understand him. But this is how people actually speak on a daily basis.

Doing the quest here for the first time, didn't understood nothing, lots of cards that are expensive do the same thing as the cheap ones, patrons don't have an use so i never use them, enabled auto play cards because there's no need to check all of them because it's mostly to earn 1 gold, and i just wait to see if the tavern gets a red card since power becomes prestige at the end of the turn, but i also wait to see if something happens on my turn so i get enough gold to buy them...
