    It's okay.
Its looks like an decent time sink, just played a few games with npc.
An auto resolve might the an good idea as I guess many play with waiting for something.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

To say I hate it would be a bit exaggerated, but I don't think it's fun either. There are better ways to spend 20 minutes; It's just so... slow. Not much is happening, you don't have to directly counter your oppponent's actions, you don't even have to think much. Of course, not everything has to be fast-paced and action-packed, but this seems boring and trivial to me, unfortunately. Which is a pity because I would really have liked some entertaining and amusing tavern games.

I really love playing tales of tribute, but I can only press I like it because of the major time investment.

When playing I always feel I could get more rapport/rewards somewhere else, with my time played. So far I have only played novice games though, so maybe the rewards improve at higher tiers.

what bothers me quite a bit is that it takes 64 wins to get from rank 3 to rank 4 and until I'll have reached rank 4, I have to play with novices still, even they never use the duke to get ahead even if they could. The only patron I have seen an NPC using was Hlaalu, converting a high value card into prestige. So basically I keep playing against NPCs, who deliberately avoid using patrons to their advantage and basically let me win big time - how can I learn anything from it?

I understand that the AI is crippling their game play at rank 1 and eventually even at rank 2 - but at rank 3 they should at least use a patron more, otherwise really ridiculous things happen:

Like the NPC has 18 gold, 12 power and 17 prestige - with me having passed the 40 line - so using the duke he could achieve 46 and eventually get ahead of me. But what is the AI doing?- creates long sequences to get to a high value card of like 9 or 10 value and then uses Hlaalu to gain 8 or 9 prestige with it, so the NPC ends up with about 35/36 losing the game - even he could have stayed in the game challenging me. At rank 3 the AI should already act smarter - I have like 40+ easy wins ahead of me before I will be rank 4 - that are about 15 hours wasted time, because I will learn nothing from it in those hours spent.

I love it, but I am afraid that the game will be "solved" way too soon. Combos make optimal moves relatively straightforward and it depends on play, buy, patron order, independent of RNG, there will be a what is the best move like in chess and I think players will get insanely good at this.

Yes and no - yes, I think that players will get insanely good at this game. No, it is not really straightforward, what to do. It is quite dynamic, dependent on what appears in the tavern early on.

Focusing on Duke/Pelin works well against a novice NPC, because due to their crippled gameplay they tend to focus on Duke/Hlaalu first and change to Duke/Celarius later on, which leaves them short of prestige for long. They could have a strong end game, if they would be using the Duke's patron feature, but all they are using is Hlaalu. At least at novice level.

My wife and I have never played any deck building card games. And, we both agree that ToT is really fun! We like the various strategies we can use to win - going for power/prestige, targeting all patrons, using agents to block, stacking wicked combo hands, etc... And the rewards seem really worth it to us; especially all the recipes and plans/diagrams we are getting. Combined with a quick round of dailies, the town in High Isles has everything we need, so we both spend more time with that as our home base, so we can start with cards games every time we log. Well done, ESO. We love it!

Against NPcs its ok. Against players? Nah. Frustrating. Meta is boring. Snowballs happen fast, but don't speed up the game. A few select lucky draws (seriously all it takes is 2-3) and the game is decided. You know its decided. But you have to wait another 20+ gosh dang minutes for it to finish. You can't leave cause you then get negative score. I've had my fill. Too much RNG, too much OP cards, too little balance between patrons/decks for interesting play. The fact they went straight into a season without balancing is mind boggling. But yeah TGC in general are horrible from a competition standpoint. With the tavern system this one is even worse.

ive seen the NPC focus on gathering pelin and psijic cards mostly, sometimes they go for hlaalu cards, but hlaalu is not in the game all the time

ive experimented using other decks such as rahjin and hunding (my personal favorite combo is a set of crows + hunding with some hlaalu cards to get freebies from the tavern lol)

i know as soon as the NPC gets pelin cards though, im on a virtual timer for when they would win due to the fast power->prestige conversion of pelin cards

as for patron use, ive mostly only seen the novice NPC use hlaalu as well but only when they get the 10 cost hlaalu clansman card

Just a thought if you are deadset on adding a game where you don't explain a large section of the gameplay/rules in the slightest in the tutorial and expect the player to work it out for themselves maybe design a game that lasts about 5 minutes with no forfeit cooldown?

I'm not particually into card games but enjoyed the likes of Gwent in Witcher 3 and Triple Triad in FF14 but from the five or six games of ToT it's bored/irritated me to the extent I just logged out to play something else.

Focus right now is getting Ember and Isobel to 20 then figure out which final builds I want to play them. Isobel alone could replace everyone with an all in one tank/heal/dps setup if I wanted, but I don't want to make the rest of them obsolete like that, choices...

I'm training Isobel for a healer/tank role and Ember will be a ranged mage/healer. This will free Bastain up to be more attack focused with 2H weapons and Mirri will remain as she is.

Tales of Tribute is ok but I think I'll need to find more card upgrades to enjoy it.

Now that players are starting to play well, my fun has diminished somewhat
Some games feel really oppressively RNG.
Some games are actually a very fierce battle of wits and strategy. I am currently 53 EU ladderboard and I dont want to slip off of the 100. But that is a hard fight.

Love the game. Played on the PTS and thought I had it figured; I hadn't scratched the surface. You can play and win at most levels, but you can only consistently win if you understand all the strategies. It isn't for everyone. Personally, I hate trying to learn all the complex choreography necessary for trials. It's good that we have alternatives in ESO for significant achievements.

My takeaway is this: learn by losing. I went into this blind, last week, and clicked my way through the first few games like a maniac. Then I got it, and easily beat low level NPCs.

I jumped right into PvP and won a few, lost a lot. I finish the 3 match daily every day, but it takes a while. Got frustrated and started to think it was bad RNG/luck. I swear at the other player a lot, since they can’t hear me.

But now I’m embracing the “learn by losing” idea, and I think it’s making me better. Every game, I see moves I hadn’t considered.

It’s a lot like PvP in Cyrodiil- if you go in worrying about dying, it’s not going to be fun. Throw yourself into the meat grinder and pick up tricks from every round.

I like a bit of everything in this game, and cards are a nice addition. I’m interested to see how I like it a few months in.

I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I have been. I can definitely see myself playing it every day, at least against NPCs. I have not tried playing against other players yet, and I'm not sure whether I'll pursue a seasonal ranking or whatever it is; I don't even know how that works yet. I'm generally more interested in having fun playing a game my own way than worrying about how I stack up against other players, but who knows?

I was talking about novice NPC - they just use Hlaalu and never other patrons, they often pick the 2nd or 3rd best card from the tavern and even if they have a huge amount of coin available and could win using the duke, they will buy cards like crazy and try to find a high value one and just create prestige by dumping it on Hlaalu - novice NPC are totally crippled by design.

I would say, its the best addition to the game so far. Deckbuilders are my most favorite board games, and this one is even better than Star Realms/Hero Realms, which are both a bit faster (higher power vs cost ratio), thus ToT provides a lot more strategy opportunities than those.

    It's okay.
TLDR: It's gambling, so it has the same effect on people and their psych as gambling does, both the good and bad.

The Big Rant: It's gambling. Therefore, all aspects of gambling apply to this game, such as the fun, addiction, RNG and tilt. Gambling/loot crates are manipulative and a disgusting business practice. Avoid it like the plague to force developers to stop supporting bad business practice. That's just my opinion. Like Todd Howard said, if you don't want to keep seeing Skyrim Remasters, stop buying them. Money talks.

Anyways, because of my view on gambling, but because I'm also an achievement ***, you won't catch me spending a single second on Tales of Tribute once I've unlocked all achievements for it. Having said that, the rewards are surprisingly pretty good, which is likely due to the fact that the devs knew a majority of people would hate the card game and not play or support it, so gotta find some way to suck players in, right? So even if you don't like the game, at least do your daily to get the purple coffer since they won't be removing TOT from the game.

In regards to the card game and its gameplay, it's fun, but it's incredibly RNG heavy, making it difficult to balance. "Yeah but IF you get these cards in your hand at the PERFECT moment and IF RNG decides to bless you with X and Y on the board, and IF-", I'mma just stop you right there. It's RNG. There is no counter to good RNG unless you get better RNG.
This isn't a traditional AAA card game, nor was it created with the intent of being as in depth as one. That'd require too much resources and commitment from ZOS. It's just suppose to add more flavor to their large world. But I guarantee ZOS has analytics, and I guarantee those analytics show that people who get turn 1 Siege Weapon Valley or The Armory, and/or early game Rally, you're 90% likely to win, especially if you continue getting Red cards early on. I guarantee those analytics show that if one of those cards are on the table, especially early game, 90% of players take them. Guess what cards people don't take early? Blue cards. Why? Because they're trash. It doesn't matter what hypothetical situations you try to spin, they're objectively the worst in the game. If you get an early game Prophecy, take it. Sage and Augur Counsel are also good mid/late game if you're trying to build up a fat combo. Otherwise, Blue cards are avoided like the plague by just about every player. And just about every player takes the opportunity to take the noted Red cards above.

Crows are second best. Crows are great, but take time to build up before they're devastating. However, Red is devastating in any scenario at any point in the game. Anyone who says that RaJhin is a counter to Red is meme'ing you so they can climb the LB's. You have to pay 12 gold on 2 cards to take the 4 prestige away that I get by spending a simple 4 gold on 1 card. Who really wins here? lol.

People will argue about hypothetical scenarios all day, and ultimately, all it does is just reconfirm two things:
1.) Red is objectively the best.
2.) RNG will always decide who the winner is.

If you want to see real thought and strategy, ban Red and Purple, or Red and Green (Green is the dumpster child of Red and Purple). Honestly, with those 3 colors not in play, that's really when the game shines because it takes much longer to win and requires much more thought and precision on strategizing your victory.
