Sorcerer Storm Caller Underwhelming

Storm Calling was seemingly meant to be the damage tree of Sorcerer, but looking at current use sorcs, the only thing actually used by anyone is Surge and Lightning Form. I think some skill morphs could be revamped to be more unique and lightning-based. With the nature of lightning in the game, I was quite shocked to realize that the entire skill tree doesn't have a chain lightning skill. Could maybe help with Sorc's lack of AoE damage?

Single target shock damage has a base chance of concussion by 10 percent. This is further enchanced while using it on destro staff and having status effects passive. If you put it on a charged staff it's 66 percent chance all together.

This is important as next patch concussion will also give 600 penetration debuff on any enemy with it. This debuff also benefits allies

At this point, Shock Damage Sorcerers are even less loved by the developers than Frost Wardens.

Where did you hear that concussion will provide a 600 pen debuff? I don't see anything mentioned in any of the PTS patch notes.

It's actually kind of interesting, Warden and Sorc have some interesting parallels.

Ultimate is widely unused in PvE and not super great in PvP as there's simply better options.

Lightning Form and Frost Cloak are the option for Major Resolve. Lightning Form is stronger as it gives major/minor expedition based on the morph and does aoe damage. But Frost cloak applies to nearby allies, which is nice.

Lightning Splash and Winter's Revenge are the Ground AoE and fairly comparable except Lightning Splash does have a synergy edging out Winter's Revenge.

Surge and Arctic Wind are a self heal (I'd wager surge is the stronger option personally)

Streak, mages fury, frozen gate, and crystallized shield are pretty unique, I'd say that Sorc comes out on top on those though.

I'm not trying to say that Storm Calling doesn't need help, but generally I'd say that it's still in a better place than Winter's Embrace from a general stance except that Warden just does more Frost Damage with Piercing Cold than Sorc does with Energized.

If they buffed Energize to match Piercing Cold there really wouldn't be a competition on which is better, Storm Calling would be superior in Every way.

Just my observations.

Also Streak is a far superior stun to Arctic Blast. Especially after it's nerf.

That being said though, I don't think it's right that on the Elemental Damage front that Only DKs can have their Cake and Eat it too. Hopefully both Sorc and Warden can realize their Elemental Potential

This the sort of greater point that I think that all of us elemental build enthusiasts can rally around.

MagDK is simply done so well and basically is the perfect expression of that particular class archetype. By comparison, the other elemental classes feel watered-down and unfocused. We all would like Frost Warden, Shock Sorcerer, Poison DK, etc. to be themed as well as MagDK and to have as many viable elemental attacks in their class toolkits.

Search status effects in pts notes week 1. It's in a wierd spot but do control f for searching

Force of Nature (New): Increases your Offensive Penetration by 900 for each status effect your target has. 1 stage, 50 points.


I was wrong it's 900...which is crazy as this will definitely add up to a lot in bigger groups. My healer for dungeons gives you 5... though I am thinking of something to get 6

But how does that help shock damage? There is concussed, burning, chilled, poisoned, etc. Lots of status effects. Support classes might use a shock glyph or lightning backbar to get concussed. But it is just 1 out of 5 or 6 different effects and nothing special stands out for a lightning build. There is still no reason to be a lightning focused DPS.

Most healers do it wrong and still use infused back bar. Even if they do it right outside trials it's unlikely to find healers doing it

Now my point is the chances are high shock damage will give sorc DPS on their own concussion.

I am not disagreeing with your topic. I was just saying there is benifit next patch

You only benefit if you slot the Force of Nature CP star. It is not a passive buff for just concussed.

Storm is not only with lightning, you have wind with hurricane... Yes only One skill with wind lool.

Fortunately overload ultimate exists !

But I agree to see more lightning/wind skills. I would love to see lightning weapon instead of crystal haha.

People seem pretty excited over the exploiter CP coming up, but I don’t know why they think it would work well with a lightning mage. If you slot the new CP and try to concuss multiple targets and use the lightning wall to set enemies off-balance, it could be an overall loss in dps because concussed status rarely procs on a majority of targets in AOE fighting. Other slotted star options will always work against all the enemies you hit. For single target fights that last 20+ seconds Exploiter tends to be no stronger than the other slotted CPs

Wardens have no problem sticking frost status on everything standing inside their Winters Revenge, and also minor brittle on a majority of groups if they’re holding a frost staff

Lightning splash always felt underwhelming. People pick the morph with the tiny radius because it lasts longer and adds a synergy. But it deals way less damage overall compared to Winters Revenge since it’s hard to place at the center of a cluster and the damage ticks are weak

That's fair, I personally like Lightning Flood for the Radius increase over the longer Duration, I definitely think Zos focused so much on Standardizing the durations on many skills, but they forgot to adjust the damage on some.

Also not to mention, Eruption last for 15s for some reason while every other ground AoE is about 10s.

don't forget lightning splash! very nice DoT and a good magicka sink for my stam sorc

but yea, you gotta feel bad for poor overload. the coolest skill in the game and it's never been worth using

I use "Mages' Wrath" as executive. It increase DPS in boss fights a little. It can do great damage in trash fights if timed properly.

However, it isnt easy to utilize right use. You need frag crystal as main spammable for boss fight and if you miss right window in trash fight you will miss a lot on DPS.

After years of nerfs, game changes, additon of stamina class morphs, moving to tanking/healing/dps skill trees, and such, Sorcerer sort of lost track of its original design philosophy. The game has changed and the class has not changed with it, or at least not changed enough.

I'd say the same thing about DK, except ZOS solved the problem by just adding over the top features and relying on hybrization to cover the weak areas.

The new classes had all of that built in to the class design at their release.

Really? I main a magsorc and find that storm-calling is the only skill line I have every piece of equipped. I personally feel like it's "the backbar" abilities more or less and are well put. All the other lines I just have one or two skills equipped and don't have any real complaints in that regard.

Stamsorc and petsorc are lacking of lightning visual effects, magsorc is a basic mage so normal.
