Impact of sharding

@ZOS_GinaBruno thank you for your recent posts highlighting extended maintenance over the next few months to implement improvements to server cold storage and sharding (whatever that is).
As I understand it, this work is supposed to result in an improvement to character load times etc.
Will this improvement be felt as a gradual improvement after each extended maintenance over the next few months, or will it be nothing until all the changes are complete and then a sudden larger hump in load performance?
