Six Years Later - We Are Still In Beta

It completely boggles my mind to think that nearly six years after ESO launched, we are: still in Open Beta in Cyrodiil. After almost six months of "testing" in which entire communities of people left the game, and guilds disbanded because of how unplayable the game is here we are in another test, poorly planned, poorly executed, and clearly having no effect on the end goal of getting the main campaign of Cyrodiil into a playable state again.

The past three weeks of No Proc testing on Greyhost between 6PM to 12AM PST have been some of the most unplayable experiences I have had in the game - ever. Constant desync from the server. Skill delay that makes skills completely useless, and often times would not even fire, or the of the best issues, Sprint not executing when you press the button, or not at all since it is server side now. Other bugs such as the "Slow Bug" where your character just moves in slow motion that seemingly only effects one faction which always results in you basically getting mowed over. Worst of the rubberbanding, not being able to break free because of the lag, your siege telling you that it's "busy", and people taking damage from people that are dead long after a fight. All of things happen not only to me, but dozens of player across three different PvP focused groups. The game, during prime time, is effectively unplayable, unacceptable, and unprofessional on so many levels. Interestingly enough though, when it comes to the skill delay, healing abilities now seem to be the most unaffected by lag - whereas offensive skills can have upwards of 6 second delays, or just simply don't fire off at all.

During off hours on Grayhost or on other campaign servers, the game is decently playable. The nostalgia of 'No Procs' is fun, but realistically with the return of cross healing (which should be changed to prioritized healing that ALWAYS focuses on your group first - then allies) combined with the removal of sets like Vicious Death have just encouraged players to faction stack and run in huge zergs that make the lag even worse. Did we not pay attention in class with regard to how to run effective experiments - you only change ONE variable at a time.

[Snip]. whatever happened in that patch fundamentally changed performance in PvP to it's detriment. One day you could fight faction versus faction versus faction with hundreds of players on screen with reasonable performance dips. Now the game is simply unplayable if you have more than 50 people in the same area at once.

I can only express my deepest disappointment in not only the lackluster attempts, poor live testing, and general lack of communication with regard to this issue the developers have put forth. Stop with this abhorrent tests, [Snip], untangle your terrible code, and upgrade your server hardware to today's standards - not that of an MMO that launched in 2014.

    This game is just a cash cow for their other failed projects. Don't expect big investments here. Those tests are just simulating action.
    It's more important to bring out a new chapter and 3 dlcs every year, no matter how bad they are. PvP doesn't earn money.

    Maybe this is the main point, they have restrictions and deadlines and aren't communication about them for x reason. Think about it like the GME / Robinhood situation when RH didn't communicate with their users and it resulted in people making all type of assumptions / speculations.

    I don't know what's going on, and it's pathetic how Cyrodiil runs. I bought a sub this month for the tests and well, I'm disappointed too.

    There is a lot of truth in this statement.

    Where we go from here is really anyone’s guess. With the current test it feels like ZOS were just throwing the proverbial at the wall to see if anything might stick. My hope for the future is very much dwindled at this point, unless Zeni are prepared to revert from server side.... everything, it’s really a lost cause.

    They don't sell dlcs regarding PvP. Even IC is free now. They have no motivation to do it better, when there is no profit from it.

    That still does not answer the question. IC is free therefore it does not earn money. What if there were some PvP oriented dlcs for a price? Also in advance: there were a few dlc packs such as Craglorn before IC. Now also free.

    Seven years. It’s been seven years since launch. The game overall is much better than it was in March 2014. So many new systems amd QoL improvements have been introduced that I would never want to go back.

    What I do want from 2014 is the pop caps. The large, really engaged pvp player base is something that Zeni squandered through continued mismanagement, and will never get back.

    Im just happy they are at least showing some interest in trying to fix it.

    I say give them more time, maybe they will figure out the best course to go to give us what we are asking for.

    OK, Original poster, what is the solution? In your programming experience of a MMORPG PvP environments what is it that they need to do?

    [Snip] so tell them what the solution is so they can code it.

    [Snip] I'm certainly not saying they are all amazing coders, but it is almost certainly different coders that are trying to sort this out than actually wrote the code in the first place.

    And the game has changed over those six years, new sets, new skills, new items, these all affect the code in different ways.

    So yes it's not perfect and Greyhost is unplayable at peak times but the original code wasn't written with all the changes that have happened in mind.

    It may be that they will never get to the bottom of it, it may be they do, but in order to gather data the best way is in the live environment because the PTS will never see the same level of use as a live environment. Sorry but that's the case with any system. You never know whether something will work until the users try it - doesn't matter how good a coder is, they cannot account for all the ways players will play.

    Ok explain to me please why a pve players sub is worth so much more than a pvp players sub????? Why when a pvp player buys a chapter for example grey more to get access to mythics is it worth so much less than a pve player buying the chapter????? Why is a pve player spending crowns on the crown store worth so much more than a pvp player doing the exact same??????? I really do not understand the pve makes more money argument..... is there some sort of discount for pvp players when subbing or buying a chapter or buying crowns wich I am unaware off?????? I really need to now if there is.....

    ESO+ cancelled and will not renew until I see improvements in Cyro. Will also be advising friends looking for PvP to look far away from ESO.
    Sick and tired of the silence from the devs, refusal to undo crap decisions such as all the code that was moved server side in U25, stupid test after stupid test to try and claw back any performance they threw away in U25.
    2021 will see the least amount of new players the game has ever seen, especially with the double amount of XP needed to reach parity with the new CP system, this will be the year the game dies.

    Funny thing is ESO had a potential and still have to be competitive PVP game kn twitch. People love and watch pvp way more than pve action. Twitch currently bing people to games, problem is they don't get it and that's why there are no investments in pvp. Look at these one of biggest stream names SypherPK comes from cyrodill. If eso would manage to attract big sponsors like fortnite did for their player base.
    Huge money pool tournaments would be possible when in games peak time it would have just 3 simple fixes:
    1.fix deam lag
    2. Balance game
    3. Make even smaller skill gap, so players can be competitive in pvp earlier
    And these game would be in different place

    ESO is is ignoring player base that actually would bring more money than any dlc they are selling now.

    I agree with you about the server side calculation move that did.. that was impacting to ALL, PVE/PVP

    MMOs can't really get that big on the eSport scene, many reasons for that.

    I didn't write that this or that kind of player is worth more. Allmost all new released (sold) content is PvE, not PvP. So money comes from that, independet from which group the buyer is identifying himself with.
