ESO on Big Sur

Hi,

Just wondering, is it safe to upgrade my mac to Big Sur?

Downloading now will let you know later. As far as I am aware it worked with the betas so in theory it should be good to go.

I have backups waiting - just in case

Download & Install took less than an hour (glad I decided to wait a few hours from the initial release).

ESO seems to perform exactly the same - i.e. same amount of time waiting for the character select screen to appear, same amount of time for character load and so far same performance in world and combat as far as I can tell. Of course my experience may not be the same as everyone else as OS upgrades can be temperamental depending on what you are upgrading from and what kit you have.

I'd suggest you try it if your Mac is on the list of supported machines and ensure you back up your data beyond any Time Machine backups you may already have.

Thanks for checking! I'll probably still wait till 11.1 to be on the safe side, but it's encouraging that even 11.0.1 is working fine.

Thanks very much for the insight. Really appreciate it.

I might backup and try it out as well.

I updated Mac OS few hours age and had only one problem with launching app for the first time.

UPDATE: After 2 dungeons, current state is terrible. Random crashes even more then after last update (2 at one dungeon), fps spikes are awful in a single room from 50 to 3 just by rotating my camera.

it's possible to play but I don't want to...

Yes. Exactly the same here. Terrible. I'm not sure if these crashes are specific for macos. Today, many guild members who play on windows reported crashes to desktop also. Let's hope for the patch on monday.

They are not, at least if you mean dungeons. This is currently normal way of working and half dungeon groups is complaining about it.

Same here. I was in vMA and the lag is so bad with the updated MacOS. To stop the lag, I was quitting the client to log back in. It works okay for 2 rounds before the lag comes back. So you die because none of your skills work. Your keys are frozen. Your screen is frozen. Then 5 seconds later, when movement is restored, the train has already left the station and you never got to wave anyone goodbye.

Fixed. I had the PTS installed and the "ESO" app in System Prefs was of the PTS instead of normal EU/PC. I had to trash entirely the PTS folder then worked again.

This is something that was happening also before Markarth and Big Sur actually but it is true, I got impression myself that with Big Sur it happens much more frequently.

Exactly the same here, crashing, you cant move character frozen. skills frozen, .. also sometimes fps dropping to like 6-7 fps that is pain.

With a new Mac OS you tend to get NEW video card drivers... with possibly new bugs... anyhow....

Do these stalls happen if you run the game say on medium settings? ( uses less video memory )

Also how much VRAM do you have?

Lowering the graphics settings didn't change anything for me. I have an eGPU (Vega 64 - 8GB) on my MBP.

I can confirm @alterfenixeb17_ESO's impression. Before Markarth on Catalina I had no problems with crashes for a long time. After the Markarth update rare random crashes occured in dungeons and trials. Now in combination with Big Sur everything has become much worse. But still no crashes in solo pve content - only in dungeons and trials.

Just throwing my two cents in:

—-Before “Big Sur” the game would also slow down and nearly freeze quite often. I could easily drop to less then five frames per sec, even if I was not in combat or swinging my camera around. And it was happening regardless of how nice the game looked so I pumped up the graphics.
I figured if this was going to be the norm, at least I can have a visually nice looking game.

—-Post “Big Sur” is exactly the same so far.

Basically, a lot of these complaints about FPS drops seem very familiar to me and I just assumed all Mac users had them. I guess I was mistaken.

I know that the Mac client is and was terrible. It's not an opinion  When we compare it to client of GW2 for example it recalls a student project not professional made game. I would love to see a proper coded client downloaded from Mac App Store but it will not happen :)

I have two similar Macs one on Big Sur and one on Catalina. Game crashes pretty well on both of them as it does on Windows too right now (according to forum threads), but fps are really issue right now. Game after 20 min starts to freeze, lose frames and be unresponsive - it wasn't so bad before. I'm not talking about losing some frames once in a while I'm talking about old intel Celeron experience :P Although restart help for another 20 min or so - and by restart I mean crash so in this way new update helped

Meanwhile I really want to see some improvements and I really not jealous about all @ZOS_GinaBruno work right now. I really love to see her on streams and like her attitude but it would be very funny if she would just once stream from Mac

@alterfenixeb17_ESO The dramatically higher-instance of lag and rubber-banding started happening on the new BigSur MacOS.

Of course, it was happening before too. Just not to this degree. Before, the lag and rubber-banding would show up after 3 or 4 stages in vMA. Now I cannot even finish one-vMA stage without extreme rubber-banding & lagging.

eGPU (Vega 64 - 8GB) - anything with that much ram should be a non issue.

Mac laptops with intel gpus on the other hand have share memory and might top out at 512-1.5 gb.

Has anyone checked the Activity monitor to see if the game client is slowly using more and more memory?
( basically leaking memory at some level leading to stalls, memory VM swapping as time goes by )

I've come back to this thread and I'm quite surprised to hear all the talk of the OS update making the game unplayable for some. I'm guessing that this may be an issue with certain machines only or maybe linked to the general random crashing that seemed to plague all platforms and resulted in todays patch? The Macs use a wide range of graphic "cards" and that would have a massive impact upon peoples experience in games. My own machine is six years old and this is probably the last big MacOS update that Apple will be providing for it but I've honestly not noticed any difference at all with the performance of ESO on Big Sur than I did with Catalina.

I tried again today and I can't play at all. I hoped today's update will help but it didn't. I have no idea if it's correct to blame OS or just it's classic "we don't care about Macs". If I can have one thing to ask it will be ZOS employee who plays on Mac :pensive:

The only thin I haven't tried is to clean instal OS and ESO. Please let me know if someone who doesn't have problems at all and upgraded or clean instal OS

Until some kind of fix I will do maybe daily writs...

Nah this is something common sadly. Possibly root cause same or similar to when it actually does crash. It's just that one more time after Big Sur it happens much more frequently. And I have also recently noticed that it also started outside of any dungeon, trial or Cyrodiil too.

Btw. Does anyone tried to run ESO from custom wine wrapper? If we can't rely on "pro" client maybe it's the better solution?

it works "normal" on Big Sur for me
since Markath the app just closes a lot in trials but thats on Windows too, nothing probably to do with Big Sur, it did that on Catalina too since the dlc launched

Looking on the Codeweavers site there are several posts about trying to get ESO running via Crossover - some seem to get it to work for a while but it seems that trying to run the Windows version via Crossover on MacOS just introduces a heap of other problems for you to try and work with.

Given the fact that BOTH the MacOS and Windows clients are suffering from random crashes at the moment (actually on my Windows Laptop I can't load any characters as they all crash on entry to the world) - I'd say just stick with the native client for the operating system you are running.

I have fibe different macs with OS Catalina and Big Sur (also with Win Pro 10) but there is no difference in crashes :(
I have tried to run it with internal graphic card, external graphic card but the game still crashes randomly. According to debug logs there is something wrong with the tame, causing several oveflows on some processes.

With other games I have no issues...

I have tested it on : iMac 2019, iMac Pro 2020, Macbook PRO 16”, MacbookPro 13”
External graphic card was Radeon Vega 64

Yes, will the game work, yes, it probably won't be any worse than it was before you're last upgrade. Hard to tell if the issues are with big sur, or update 28 which seems to have screwed up a lot. still there's yet another round of bug fixes this week.

Say please, before you AAAAAaaaarrrgghhh at me.

I am curious has anyone here using an Xbox controller (either wired or bluetooth) with Big Sur? I've heard there are compatibility issues so I am reticent to upgrade my laptop.
