CPU cores does the settings matter still?

All of the old threads Ive found about the game not using multiple threads seem to be out of date. Is the -1 setting in the documents note pad ok to use or should I switch that to how many actual cores I really have? I feel like this is pretty important to get the settings correct since the games bottleneck seems to be on the cpu side. Thanks for any help.
