No way. Accidentally stealing items is a traditional Elder Scrolls feature.

Along with A/C, quest bugs and standing on/hanging underneath your mount?

Some "features" you are better off without.

NO, honestly it adds color to the game. Leave it as is!

It is not hard to avoid, slow down and stop trying to face-roll through your selections, LMAO it really is a L2P issue.

Learning to slow down really isn't a L2P issue.

Enough people accidentally steal around writ drop-offs that the Lazy Writ Crafter addon added a prevent-accidental-stealing feature.

Yeah, but I don't like that, because I like to check in containers first, to see if it's worth stealthing.
Not sure how this addon handles it, but there are addons that simply require you to be crouching to steal something. Doesn't prevent theft entirely, and anyone intent on theft is 99% likely to be crouching anyway while poking around. It's a really nice way of handling it, and I wish ZOS would make it standard so console gamers can be saved from this frustration too

Well, no - if you do a lot of intentional stealing, the addon that requires you to crouch first makes it harder.

As, with it active, you can't just casually check in containers, to see if there is anything worth stealing, before you then crouch (if there is).

I steal more than I buy things from guild stores, so (on average) using the addon is more of a hindrance to me than the occasional accidental theft.

...and if they made it so you had to crouch before you could even look in containers, that would be disastrous.

If, on the other hand, they made it so you had to crouch before stealing items that were fully on display (meat, vegetables, fruit etc.), that would probably be fine.

What next? Please remove stealable items from around all vendors? And craft areas? How about don't be lazy and stupid and you will not click the wrong thing?
Why can people not accept their own faults in things? Guild vendors are supposed to blend into the world like normal NPCs.

This end up for many being the first Aggravation of the day when interacting with some Guild traders. I've accidentally stolen so many items especially from the blonde trader by the cart in Reapers March.

I have this all the time when doing writs in Davon's Watch. I usually use the provisioning stations at the Fish Stink, but it took me ages to realize that I specifically had to look at the fire to cook, if I looked at the pot, I'd steal whatever stew they had in there.

    :|

I'd be okay with a "prevent stealing" toggle, but I've just some to the realization that I need to slow down and look what I'm doing more than anything else.

Now for my other characters... they can take whatever they want. But not my main, he's law abiding.

Honestly, this is a nuisance. When you try to interact with a guild trader surrounded by toons, you often double click these random stealable items surrounding the guild vendor and steal. Paying less than 100 g is not an issue. When you are in hurry, this is really annoying. Put stealable carrots and mugs all around NPC merchants for RPG. Please, just remove em around the guild traders.

Yeah I wholeheartedly agree. Tired of picking up hanging fish when I just want to interact. Meant to create a thread like this a long time ago. Thanks.

Maybe not the ideal solution, but you can to use the add-on " Dolgubon's Lazy Writ Crafter". It have an option thah prevents you from accidentally stealing items when turned on.

Personally, I think the dev's log in, grab a beverage and chips and take bets on which toon running by to a trader is going to be Nuked by a passing guard for accidentally clicking "steal". Then they take bets on if u will make a break for it. Removing this feature would kill the dev's fun.

In Rimmen, stealables on the provision grates and the "hit box" for the station is really weird so you end up stealing food if your not careful. Steal stuff turning in writs, interacting with guild traders, using crafting stations, etc.

Sure i can turn off stealing, but its annoying to have to flip it back and forth all the time as i do steal on my characters. They could just not place those items around areas like that. Or make them normal items that arent flagged as stealing if you want to keep the "immersion"

That's... exactly how the addon works. You can look in containers all you like, just can't accidentally take anything unless you're crouched. And if you're planning to steal something, you're probably crouched anyway so no extra hassle. Just extra protection from stealing loose items accidentally

”I’m in a hurry” isn’t an excuse to steal things.

Once, in Vivec City, I was trying to interact with the banker inside the kiosk, but as usual there was a horde of other players crowded around the kiosk, so I couldn't see what I was doing and accidentally picked up the stack of coins that was sitting on the countertop in plain view. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!)

Unfortunately, the guard that patrols that area was just walking past at that exact moment, caught me, and killed me when I took too long to decide what to do, because I didn't have the "I know a lot of really important people who sign your paycheck and they won't be very happy with you if you continue to annoy me" option yet, and I was just standing there going "Duh? Huh? What just happened? Why am I in trouble for stealing 10 pieces of gold? Did I just pickpocket another player or something?"

Now that I know there's a stack of coins that may or may not be there, I always approach the kiosk from an angle where I can see the coins if they're there, go into sneak, check to be sure the guard isn't walking past, and grab them. Yes, it's just 10 gold, or sometimes less, so it's not worth the time spent on looting it when you can easily loot much more profitable stuff. But it's free money just lying there, so...
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!

    I agree with this.

It really adds to the charm of this franchise.

Besides, steal one item? Just go to a guard, and stop being cheap.

That addon only prevents theft when writs are actually active. The setting does nothing most of the time.
