Roll dodge in the wrong direction

I have died so many times because for some reason my character will roll dodge in the wrong direction. This is on PC. I use a separate button for roll dodge vs a double tap roll dodge. I will be running in a direction and hit roll dodge and for some reason my character will roll dodge backwards. It will only do this while I am in PVP combat. If I am just running around not in combat it roll dodges in the correct direction every time. And, even in combat it doesn't do it consistently.

This usually roll dodges me right into the group of people that are chasing me. About a third of those times it is the cause of my death. Also, about a third of the times it saves me because the people end up running right past me and totally loosing track of me. However, I would prefer that my character goes in the direction I want it to go.

Has anyone else had to deal with this issue?

I don't know why this happens to you but the default roll direction should be changed from backwards to forwards.. No one wants to roll backwards...

The default roll dodge direction if you aren’t holding down a button is backwards.

If you’re holding down a directional button and either 1. Get stunned or 2. Get on siege, and you continue holding that button down after you break free and then roll dodge, the direction you’re holding down will not count for the roll dodge and it will default to backwards. I don’t know why, that’s just the way it is.

It’s good practice to let go of WASD for a split second every time you break free so that you don’t end up accidentally roll dodging backwards. Same with siege.

Edit: in other words, stuns/fears/knockbacks/siege make your roll dodge button “forget” which directional button you’re holding down. You have to let go of that Button and then press it again in order for roll dodge to be in that direction

Happens all the time in the worst situations, i used to think it happens when i accidently let go of the W "forward" key but i'm not so sure anymore.

Default roll dodge is backwards because of its use to kite and attack at the same time with a ranged abilities, but yup, this can be frustrating but happens a lot less often than Psijic Ultimate failing which is much more annoying.

Been happening to me since day 1 on one character only. I actually thought roll dodge direction was always backwards edit: no matter if you had the w or forward key pressed or not, for a year. Then i made an alt. It's a weird bug. It affects the others sometimes but my main always goes backwards no matter which direction I am moving in
    .
But i didn't know about break free and stuns. Thanks for that information. It may help a lot.

I have to wonder if there are reasons beyond getting stunned or using siege. My Warden generally doesn't have any issues with dodge rolling in the wrong direction nowadays, but it has been happening to my Templar quite a bit, and I'm not really doing anything different with regards to breaking free and moving afterwards.

Perhaps roots are affected in the same way that stuns are? My Templar has an easier time getting out of those (vastly superior cleansing, as well as Mist Form), while I'm used to having to dodge roll out with my Warden. Maybe I'm cleansing the roots and the game is "forgetting" that I'm still holding down the forward movement key, thus causing me to dodge roll backwards if I don't stutter-step first? I'm really not sure.

All of this is correct, which is what it makes it so rage inducing. I lose my *** to this at least once for every long session of ESO.

Because you'll still occasionally get caught out and roll dodge backwards off a tower or rock or bridge after a cc break.... and die because of it. And that is because my brain is refusing to accept the irrationality that the default character movement direction would be the opposite from the direction they're facing. It makes no sense whatsoever.

I have more roll dodge deaths off cliffs / ledges / towers versus rolling into enemies... sadly, I wish I could blame a stun, fear, some form of CC. Nope, nothing logical like that. I just happen to just have my jump and roll so close together and fat fingers combined...

Sorta like that 50s song, "Where oh where can by baby be? She just roll dodged to her death in random BG."

It also happens in lag so the server does not register the press forward. In some situation it will happen that the fist dodge roll after you died is always backwards and only to dodge once after you respawned will fix it. (In cyro)

    This is my personal opinion/experience
Ice Furnace: This item set now grants Spell Damage, rather than Weapon Damage for the 4 piece bonus

If you use the keybind for roll dodge your character will roll dodge backwards by default unless you have chosen a direction. I have never had my character roll in an unpredictable manner when I had chosen the direction.

I usually roll dodge left or right but might go forward sometimes, idk.

Aren’t you suppose to choose the direction you want to roll in rather than simply hitting dodge? Is this a keyboard thing, controller or both ?

I do this pretty regularly unfortunately. Dodge roll to get to LOS object? Nope, now you’re square in the middle of your pursuers.

Yeah, it happens to me too

Related to what @Thogard said... the worst part if that the game sometimes doesn't show stun animations/state correctly, so you lose control of your char in the middle of the fight but don't realize it since it just stays there doing nothing... which is hard to see in the middle of a big fight (like defenses or pushes...) where you might get stunned and not be dead immediately due to the healing, but as soon as you recover try to roll and that happens.

Coming in here because its unlikely its what the person is doing. As stated by @Thogard , if you are not moving the game will default you do dodge roll backwards. The bug in question though came into the game around the Homestead patch

So there are a few skills that will make you stop moving for a splint second. The ones I know are
    -Breath of Life
    -Healing Ward
    -Healthy Offering
    -Blessing of Protection
-Nox Breath(Dont have video of this one)

    Videos of said thing:

When this happens, your character stops for a faction of a second. So if you happen to dodge roll when that stopping occurs, you will dodge roll backwards.

Trying to dodge roll forward fast after Jabs is pain too, with bound key or with double tapping W.. both fail usually, dodge roll backwards works though. But i dont want to, usually wanna dodge roll forward and through my target, for obvious reasons when outnumbered.
