I have died so many times because for some reason my character will roll dodge in the wrong direction. This is on PC. I use a separate button for roll dodge vs a double tap roll dodge. I will be running in a direction and hit roll dodge and for some reason my character will roll dodge backwards. It will only do this while I am in PVP combat. If I am just running around not in combat it roll dodges in the correct direction every time. And, even in combat it doesn't do it consistently.
This usually roll dodges me right into the group of people that are chasing me. About a third of those times it is the cause of my death. Also, about a third of the times it saves me because the people end up running right past me and totally loosing track of me. However, I would prefer that my character goes in the direction I want it to go.
Has anyone else had to deal with this issue?
I have to wonder if there are reasons beyond getting stunned or using siege. My Warden generally doesn't have any issues with dodge rolling in the wrong direction nowadays, but it has been happening to my Templar quite a bit, and I'm not really doing anything different with regards to breaking free and moving afterwards. The default roll dodge direction if you aren’t holding down a button is backwards.
If you’re holding down a directional button and either 1. Get stunned or 2. Get on siege, and you continue holding that button down after you break free and then roll dodge, the direction you’re holding down will not count for the roll dodge and it will default to backwards. I don’t know why, that’s just the way it is.
It’s good practice to let go of WASD for a split second every time you break free so that you don’t end up accidentally roll dodging backwards. Same with siege.
Edit: in other words, stuns/fears/knockbacks/siege make your roll dodge button “forget” which directional button you’re holding down. You have to let go of that Button and then press it again in order for roll dodge to be in that direction

- Update 23Ice Furnace: This item set now grants Spell Damage, rather than Weapon Damage for the 4 piece bonus
Coming in here because its unlikely its what the person is doing. As stated by @Thogard , if you are not moving the game will default you do dodge roll backwards. The bug in question though came into the game around the Homestead patch
So there are a few skills that will make you stop moving for a splint second. The ones I know are
-Breath of Life
-Healing Ward
-Healthy Offering
-Blessing of Protection
-Nox Breath(Dont have video of this one)
Videos of said thing:
When this happens, your character stops for a faction of a second. So if you happen to dodge roll when that stopping occurs, you will dodge roll backwards.
