Start soloing resources. As far as I can tell it's the most team oriented thing that a solo player can do. Any 561, and really any 300, with the right set up can do this. Once done just report what you did in area chat and move along. You'd be amazed how much this can help focus the masses on taking keeps while you clean up the map for your team.
Bonus is that if you do it right, and pick your spots you can get 3 or 4 of them done before any Zerg can react, and by that point you should be long gone.
Yes, you will occasionally get Zerged down or pick a bad spot. It happens. But gankers don't generally hang out at resources that are not near the front line.
So next time you think that one person can't help the war, find a resource and put a point on the board for your faction!
If you can't handle the damage or are on azuras do it this way.
Pull the tower healer behind the tower and kill
pull the tower guard behind the tower kill
kill the tower mage guard
Find the guard pather and kill
Walk to the flag, don't gap close. If you gap close they will drop a negate right on the flag. Say on the edge until it drops.
You can also siege it down if it's not level 5(iirc) where they get siege shields.
I sometimes solo down resources on Azura's. It's tricky, but not hard.
1. Pull the weak guards into the tower and kill them. Heal up.
2. Clear the mage guard at the top of the tower. Then heal up.
3. Kill the healers (sometimes need to use a basic pot or two. Aborb magic is fantastic here since they all use magical attacks.)
4. Recover resources while under fire.
5. Burst down the DK-styled guards one at a time.
LOS is your friend when capping resources. That said, If a player shows up while I'm fighting I'll be looking at the wayshrine shortly.
One of the hardest things about taking resources solo is the time it takes for the flag to flip... be sure to hold block and stay buffed while on the flag. I don't think the resource flags on the map until you are flipping the flag, but once it lights up on the map, there is still plenty of time for enemy players to respond.
