Yes, it's extremely dispiriting to have to abandon a fight. A useful, if incomplete, remedy is to take that same group to a dungeon they can crush.
PvE group design always stresses game designers to their limits too. There're only so many things you can contrive until the entire activity feels contrived. Yet it remains the most popular activity in MMO style online games.

I've done Blackheart Haven a few times and never encountered this issue. Were you running it on vet or normal? I haven't run it on normal since the update and was wondering if it was just that mode. But there are so many intermittent bugs with this game it's hard to pinpoint them all.
I hate that in Banished Cells the feasts keep coming that lock you in combat and make it impossible to trade inside the dungeon too...
